wow! that clip was like a dream come true. I never thought anyone with the resources to do such a thing would bother doing that. If there are still people like mr.B or psychocow(they're the same ryt?) that still sees hope for our country, then there IS still hope. We are not yet doomed. Thank GOD! I hope this project would become a success and that it would change the outlook of the Filipino people. Congratulations mr. cow. good job!

This is the RealManila project, and you saw it here first. I've been dreaming up this project for the LONGEST time, and finally, I scrape enough money to do a shoot. It's a long way to go, but with a lot of help, I think we can pull this off.
You were also looking into a project about Filipino food, Direk.
I observed that with the introduction of agriculture with what is now the Philippines, rice had become the center of the Filipino diet.
Other than Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, rice also makes a showing at merienda in the form of travel cuisine such as Bibngkas, Biko, Carioca or as Arroz Caldo.
Even the Filipino stomach had adopted to a rice-centered diet that one won't feel satisfied unless a substantial amount of rice is consumed (which makes extra-rice a popular add-on option when ordering fast food).
However, that could change with growing populations and rising rise prices. Rice should be replaced or supplanted as the Filipino's leading staple food

I disagree. I think rice should stay as our dietary staple. The government should find a way to address the increasing demand for rice, and we as consumers should not be as wasteful with our consumption of rice.
And the term for merienda-type rice is Kakanin. I think.
Japan also treat rice as a staple, the same way that we do. :) We're carbohydrates eating people. We live for Arroz Caldo or lugaw in the morning, sapin sapin or suman for merienda, rice and ulam for lunch, bibingka or puto for afternoon snack and paella for dinner. :)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations says "Rice is life." This is more true in an agricultural region like Asia. We can survive with rice alone (and a bit of salt maybe). We even had the best rice production in Asia, and most countries emulated our example. And then we have our rice terraces to put up on the world map.
While culturally, rice is the star of the dining table, it is getting that expensive to be consumed in the great amounts we are used to.
Other than growing population, we have been importing rice ever since Spanish times which is why Rice self-sufficiency is becoming more and more challenging.
I won't be surprised if Rice would have to share table space with root crops like Kamotes and Kamoteng Kahoys which require less land to grow and can survive storms.
Kakanin by the way can be classified as travel cuisine since it was cooked such that you can eat it in travel with little hassle.
Speaking of which, what do you think of McDo's rice burger?

i think di nagclick yung rice burger ng mcdo.... the idea was nice combining the idea of ahaving a meal to go.. based from personal experience e di ko nagustuhan ung lasa ng rice burger. pra kasing suman sa lagkit yung kanin dun..and nagbibitak bitak sya once kinagat mo na... messy kainin tuloy...
@eastydie: cool pic! ill get one too since marami naman akong freetime this sem . =)
mcdo rice burger is a futile attempt to tap the filipino rice diet.. i mean yeah its economical, innovative and kinda handy. pero pinoys wont replace the traditional kanin-ulam tandem for something as half satisfying. mcdonalds is an international firm with a native franchise, they should have known better than to eat rice by hand (in a manner of eating it like a burger is what i mean).
and roachy is right, saglit lang cya sa market. also the characteristic of rice prevents it from retaining its hsape, unless didiligan mo talaga cya ng 2big. then its a kakanin burger nalang.
kakanin in bulacan means native merienda-food doesnt have to be rice, basta pang merienda.
suman-yakap made from kamoteng kahoy also is kakanin, along with others made from banana, and sweet potatoes, also casava
i can't imagine na didiligan mo ng tubig ang rice burger... it would be like kanina+ulam+sabaw! holy kamote! how the heck would you hold that sticky thing...
i remember the sabaw thinggy from chateau 1771 "miss sabaw nga.." - notski hahhaha

Wrong. We were exporting rice up to the 70s. Why do you think IRRI is located in the Philippines? The fact is, the rice shortage is due to decades of bad governance.

Yes, but only because there are people who believe so. Kahit na marami tayong influences galing sa ibang bansa, mayroon at mayroon tayong pinanggalingan at babalikang bayan at lahi, at marami sa atin ang iyon ang pinaglalaban. Returning to the roots, ika nga nila. =)
It is so ironic that many of the flaws as a nation were already causin trouble way back then during the 1896 Revolution
Bonifacio was a victim of crab mentality. His win as Minister of Interior of the Philippine Republic in the 1897 Tejeros Conventions was contested because he did not finish his studies. However, Bonifacio heavily read independently, mostly works like the Rights of Man, Victor Hugo novels, biographies of US Presidents and several other works. These books are required reading for PolSci Majors. He also drafted with Emilio Jacinto the KKK constitution which is can qualify as a Thesis making Bonifacio a PolSci MA. Bonifacio was tried for treason and shot. Those who ousted him are mostly small town elites who chose up and coming Town Mayor and rebel commander Emilio Aguinaldo.
The descendants of this group who rose to power not by their magnanimous acts but through friendships and kin are now the politicians who run this country

oo nga pla. HAppy Independence DaY! ngunit tunay nga ba tayong malaya? ano sa tingin niyo?
oo naman, thats why the government is performing very poorly coz they are free to do so.
and if we try harder, we can stop them and make ammends. we are also free to do so..
so why are we still in a slump? i think most of us is not using or even appreciating the freedom we have, too busy complaining against the government when all they do is watch and complain even more. they think they're being choked by the present government making them unable to do anything but the reality is they really are free to do something.
even if we are halted by soldiers and tanks, we are still free to pursue our goals and ideals. the enemy? doubt, insecurities, pride and fear that what we are doing wont suceed, or what others will think about us..
i have this friend, we have this fight coz im defending jun lozada(remember him?i do). he said that people like me are the ones making the country poor.. if i just work to make money instead of going to rallies and listening to such a nobody, then PH will be a quieter place. thats fine, he got a point since im a nobody, so as others like me, but i just told him that im free to do so as i please, so as the others that is like me and shares what i think. and he is also entitled to his opinion.
i sometimes think that were too free...minsan nawawala ung discipline because were too fond of that freedom..or just using it the wrong way..
@Tora: i like the bonifacio thing. it was lazaro makapagal (i think) who shot procopio and andres.
We're also free because no matter what people or the authorities do to circumvent the rules and make them less convenient, we always insist on what we want. We can also insist on what we believe in, and if someone holds it against us, we're allowed to defend ourselves.
@ cow: thats true, textbooks blames aguinaldo for killing them though sir lazaro pulled the trigger under his command. ive read that if bonifacio was to listen to rizal, then the revolution will be slower. good thing the man is reckless(all thanks to the book he read..victor hugo and the likes)
@tenk: haha! maybe in an instance, mr B could be chased by a man with a bolo. just kidding, history is history.
wait a sec. is mr L's name is Procopio? andres's brother?
Historian Teodoro Agoncillo did not say that Aguinaldo directly ordered the killing as did the assassination of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo ordered the killing.
It is best to say that he has command responsibility for his subordiantes who had the 2 killed
