The only way we can reverse this trend is to fight it.
I for one do NOT agree with the concept that stuff has to be dumbed down so that the masses can accept it. It's not like Super Twins is a high concept to begin with. As long as the majority of TV people think along those lines, they will simply perpetuate the stupidity.
(Digression) I hate to sound elitist here, but the biggest reason the upper and middle class have it better in life is not because they have the money, but because they have the right mindset. That's why rich people who suddenly become poor still have a fair amount of breeding, and poor people who become rich overnight are still lacking in imagination (and oftentimes lose the money quickly).
My point? The mind is a powerful thing, but it has to be cultivated, exposed. If it's left alone, it shrinks, withers, atrophies. Mass media could be one such tool to help cultivate minds, but sad to say, most practitioners don't go the extra mile. They are content with feeding senseless trash to the viewers "because it sells". Well, enough is enough.
If only producers would take the risk, if only networks would support more intelligent fare, if only practitioners would realize the enormous responsibility they have, then maybe we can turn things around. We cannot undo all of the mind-numbing stupidity overnight, but we would have to start somewhere.
Haven't been watching local tv that much, save for occasional Pilipinas, Game Ka Na Ba? (FRAGGLE: you should've announced your tv "debut"!) and the news. However, since my discman can pick up tv frequency, I got to follow Pinoy Dream Academy.
Without the visual distraction, I got to really listen to the singers. Then I made the mistake of watching the championship night. The 3rd placer shouldn't have won. Bitin siyang mag-perform. In fairness to the guy, he's got the voice plus the looks. His problem is that hindi niya tinotodo ang performance niya. Kumbaga, may ibubuga pa ang boses niya pero instead na i-hit niya ang higher notes at gawin pang powerful (not necessarily belting out), he plays it safe and settles for a weak performance.
Local tv shows share that common flaw. It's that "puwede na" mentality. How about raising the bar higher? Goes to the audience too.
Have yet to read the full story in the papers today, but what's with the rumored political shakedown troubling ABC5?

Dubbing the Bleach anime series is no problem at all eventhough they're using, err... non-professional dubbers. But Lupin with Richard Gutierrez? Oh come on! He's not even skinny! At ano naman kaya kinalaman ni Katrina Halili dun sa story...? I mean andun na Rhian whatever her surname is di ba?
And what in purgatory is Super Twins?? Hello????????? Corny na kaya. As in super corny.

I have no pity whatsoever for that network although, understandably, I feel bad for some of the people who lost their jobs (because a lot of the jobless peeps will NOT get work anywhere else even if they paid the networks to get them). In fact, I am damn pleased this happened. I knew this day would come, and now, it has.
This station got a the chance of a lifetime when Tony Boy bought the company. But what do they do with the money? They squandered it! They wasted, pilfered, flat-out stole all that money. Instead of streamlining the company, instead in investing in the future (by making quality shows), they just threw everything away. When they were starting over, they made huge announcements regarding their future, only to sit on their hands for a entire year. Then, they spend countless millions on huge crap shows, but refuse to accept programming proposals from interested parties (A lot of shows in ABS-CBN now were initially pitched to ABC5. They said no. Idiots). And all that time, they were bellirigent about the whole thing, they felt like they were on top of the world.
GMA has no plans on showing Deathnote. Dunno where did that "news" come from.. First, it's too "Adult themed" (kaya nga ndi natapos ang Witch Hunter Robin and Hell Teacher Nube) and second it'll be too expensive for them (since the season has just ended.) Bleach, well, I'm not excited, I don't think the dubbers could give justice to the show but then again I just might be surprised.
So far, I'm not enticed to watch Asian Treasures, I mean whats with Angel Locsin's hair and Robin's smirking @ the camera all the time? Eww..
ABC 5's demise is surely not shocking, after the crappy shows that they've been feeding us lately (tagalized ripley's??? hello, RPN has been showing Ripley's in its original format.. ano sa tingin mo sa mga viewers? Ndi marunong magenglish?) and bad management. Tsk. Sayang, they were given the chance to make it big pa naman.
Oh well, ganyan talaga e.

I didn't watch Pinoy Dream academy or Pinoy Big Brother. In fairness, I did like the idea they had of not only getting talented people who could sing, but could also compose their own songs. The idea is good, but their execution of the program could be better. I don't like Pinoy Big brother because it's a waste of time. In fairness to Philippine Idol, I heard somewhere that the US was surprised at the level of the talents they got in the program and that they thought we had higher standards than they did. Again, i didn't watch the program from start to finish. I did get to see the top 5 onwards. There are so much singing contests but where do all their talents go? Like starstruck...they get new actors all the time, but never really get to break in because they give so much attention to a few actors (who really couldn't act, just raise ratings).
About Anime...sadly, since sumikat yung anime, 'di na nila tinitignan yung content kung pwede siya sa mga bata. well, all they do is edit / censor or cut out some parts and add a PG13 rating. I thought Evangelion was pretty violent when they showed it on ABS-CBN before. But heck...nawawala rin yung story if they keep cutting things out just for the sake that they put it on air. I'm surprised at how much anime they've been getting, especially on QTV 11.
Ndi ba maxadong brutal ung Death Note para sa time slot for kids? DN is cool pero baka gawin nilang "kiddified" version....slash-cut-paste.
I didn't get to see how they showed GTO the anime on TV. I am much worried with GTO live. I still don't like the image of a perv teacher, though having good intentions and was able to correct his students. ewan ko ba...
nakapanood na ako ng ilang episodes ng GTO live and it wasn't good. Onizuka wasn't blonde, he didn't go around in a motorecycle and fuyutsuki wasn't as sunny as in the anime. and i don't like the actor who played kikuchi. he didn't look smart enough to be kikuchi.

Fact: Mr. C. was disappointed that the text votes showed that "masang pinoy" goes for appeal rather than talents.

Putsa, AGREE! Kainis!
So they shouldn't have text votes. Then again, money matters come into play here. syempre dun rin nila makikita kung gaano karami yung nanonood sa kanila. hay...or what they could do is smaller percent of the total judging yung votes and more from the judges themselves. OR...scrap the show

It makes us think that judgement wise people who watch AI are more discriminative than people who watched PI. Anyway, its done naman na e, kaya it's time for the crappy people in Star Struck to STRIKE us again with TALENT-less and CLASS-less acts. "Smile mo kita ko.. ewwwwww"

I did regret the day I missed to watch Frag on PGKNB? hehehe wala ba sa youtube? >.<
Based on the above posts.
Super Twins: yucky! I have already watched sailormoon live-action and i liked it. super twins.. never.
Lupin: hmm.. GMA7 wont be doing the anime version but the original french version. Lupin III and Lupin are not the same people.

DN is slated to be shown @ Animax later part of the year.

If my memory served me right. I discovered DeathNote manga in manga-source when it was still open for public reading. I patiently waited for the Raw chapters to be translated. After I read the chapter where L died. I stopped.

Paborito ko ngayon eh God? Save Our King. sa animax sya. 6pm M-F.
twistedkai wrote: DN is slated to be shown @ Animax later part of the year.
hmmm..lesser of the two evils.Watch death note dubbed by animax or GMA? hmmm... sana ibalik na lang ng animax yung supermaniax slot nila, where they show subbed anime with...er...mature content.
tungkol naman kay Lupin, i heard from a reliable source that richard's character lupin ios not monkey punch's lupin the third. yung character nya suave na parang james bond...pero magnanakaw siya. he's actually a rich, debonair guy with kleptomania. so i heard.

Oli: As much as it was disheartening that L died, the manga series was still a good read after that. Though Near and Mello couldn't replace L, the story and how it was wrapped up was still pretty good..
Syeri: On GTO, the guy might be a bit pervy, but I think it was just on a normal level like most guys undergoing hormonal changes.. :p Honestly, when it comes to his students, he shows more of a paternal love. He's really like a guy version of Gokusen, rather, Yankumi was a female version of him (since GTO was shown before Gokusen). :D I hope you can still give it a try. :D Wag nga lang yung tagalog dubbed.. haha.. sama ko..

@Felicia: at least you could send them "polute" hate mails. I never learned how to be polite when I'm gonna bash somebody. Just thought that since you and Mello like Death Note much more than I do (because I still haven't finished the manga or the live action) you'd get to enjoy "mutilating" them. Then again, sorry if I upset you or Mello. :sorry:
@ Oli: WAAAAA!!! L DIED???
I never really got the chance to watch Philippine Idol because it never caught my interest back then and I don't know if it's just me pero parang galing sa isang vacuum space ung ung tunog...

on MTV ASIA - or MTV Philippines, I heard something like they didn't renew their contract. Therefore, it's no longer aired.
there's a TELL KBP thing going on. I saw the ad on RPN 9. You can text KBP complaints, reports, comments on local shows and they will study it. This is to better the broadcast media. I hope i could see the ad again and get the info on where to text. If anybody knows, this would be a good idea to be heard.
twistedkai wrote:The live action of GTO is not as great as the anime version, but Gokusen Live was pretty cool.
i totally agree! kahit na medyo pina-ganda nila si yankumi sa live action version, maganda pa rin sya. yukie nakama is too cute to be yankumi. matsujun, however, is perfect as Sawada shin.

Hahaha. Lyndon and I had a discussion about the commercialization of anime when we first met. I think he called me a purist back then.
I foresaw the fall of anime culture ever since that GMA "We are Anime" bull****.
