Baket ang mga superheroes ng mga amerikano, laging nakatights, hindi ba nila naisip na mainit at masikip yon? Buti pa mga protagonists sa manga, may decent na damit.....
Bakit kamo? Well, if we trace back the history of comic book superheroes, you will find out that they based the tights & spandex outfit to the circus performers back in the early 20th century. Since then, lots of heroes now wear modified & modern takes on the superhero attire. Examples are the X-Men, Arsenal of the Outsiders, Superboy of Teen Titans,(if you can call that outfit of his a costume.) & all the trench coat wearing bad ass characters. There, enough for you yamiyo? Hope this helps.
there is also a current trend that western cartoonists are measured by how well they draw human physiology. which is ridiculous when you see the triple d cups of their superheroines.
if theres anything manga has improved, its the notion that you dont have to prove your in-depth knowledge of musculature.
isa pa: why are western superhero outfits so bright? they should be wearing ads the way they stand so noticeably from the background.
Well, i don't exactly dig that part of Western comics, Lyndon. But since i love everything "old school" at nakalakihan na natin yan, eka nga ay natutunan ko na rin tanggapin ang mga flaws na yan tungkol sa Western illustration at art. Probabaly the reason as to why they do those heroic poses is so that they will look cool & villains might get scared of them(NOT!) & kids will buy their comic books all the more. It helps that the poses serve to focus your attention on their well sculpted & defined physique & well tailored outfits!(LOL!)
BTW guys, are superhero comic books still aimed for kids or not? Just curious as to what you think of this. Lyndon?
It's kind of unfair to say that mangga is indeed better than Western comics but sad to say, yeah it is true. In terms of overall art quality & storytelling, mangga still has the edge but i like to keep an open mind on these things, being a Art grad myself. I believe that each style has it's own pros & cons, that are totally unique to one another. Different strokes for different folks. To each his own, really! I just love the western superheroes because of the majesty & grandeur that their concepts bring but i also love the Japanese sentai because of their cool getups & superb team dynamics.(Except the Power Ranger series, where there's a "6th" ranger in every incarnation, just so the producers of the show could sell more toys to kids. What's up with that, yamiyo?) I love all great concepts, actually! I don't really care from what country they come from, whether Japan, Korea, Philippines, Taiwan. Canadian. Europe, Asia or America, the important thing here is that the overall concept is cool & i can dig it & that the storyline resonates with me on some level. That's all there is to it.
BTW, hindi lang naman Western Art ang may pintas, ah! What's with the big eyes & overly cute outfits & expressions? They are fine & cool when you're a teen but icky like cotton candy when you've outgrown it. Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, i used to enjoy these but eventually got tired of them. Also, Superman to me is still better than Son Goku anyday! Akira Toriyama, creator of the Dragon Ball series was inspired by Christopher Reeve's "SUPERMAN" movie. See you guys, Son Goku came from the Man of Steel. Without SUPERMAN introducing the super being concept, there won't be Dragon Ball, UltraMan, Astro Boy & etc. That's how great his concept is. Son Goku, without DBZ will be nothing but SUPERMAN is still SUPERMAN without the JUSTICE LEAGUE cartoon. That's how ICONIC he is. Forgive me for my long extrapolation on the history of superhero comic books but everytime somebody tells me that Son Goku is way better than Supes, i feel offended & have to put them in their proper place. It just hits a nerve with me. May i ask as to what you two think of Alex Ross & his wonderfully painted renditions of Western Superheroes, particularly Dc & MARVEL? Well?
Yeah but there is also The Adventures of Batman, Go Teen Titans & Justice League Adventures that is being published by Dc & are targetted for kids. Also, WB titles like Looney Tunes, Duck Dodgers & Archie Comics still cater to kids but they are not superhero titles.
As i've said before, to each his own. Different strokes for different folks. Comics as a medium is indeed a powerful form of stoytelling & the potential of the medium is infinite, limitless. That's the beauty of it all.
From MARVEL: Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics, Les Daniels, 1991
p.17 The Super Hero Costume
"The standard super hero costume, which might seem more appropriate for gymnastics than hand-to-hand combat, immediately became all but obligatory for the first comic book heroes in the late 1930's; in the present the costume is a comic book convention. Artists laughingly refer to such outfits as "long underwear."
In truth, comic book artists, many of whom have at least some classical art training, and all of whom are pressured by deadlines to draw quickly, enjoy rendering what is in effect the nude figure in action. The reader responds with the unconcsious understanding that gaudily colored near-nakedness is the proper attire for fictional characters enacting dreams and fantasies, as did the ancient gods. For generations of comic book readers, the skintight costume has seemed tha appropriate garb for heroes who embody their deepest dreams of freedom and power."
p.16 "Lee Falk and Ray Moore's "The Phantom"... was the first comics character to dress in tights from head to toe."
various pages: From 1982 to 1988, SPider-Man was seen around town in a black outfit known as "the alien costume"... Spidey looked more like a ninja than his old self. This black costume would eventually develop as the disguise for a villain (Venom).
p.222 "As of May 1988 the artist on Amazing Spider-Man was Todd McFarlane... who was no fan of the character's black costume... and notes that "before I took the book, I knew they were going back to the old one. Otherwise I wouldn't have done it." Spidey returns to hiss classic fashion statement... in Amazing Spider-Man #300 (May 1988).

From the same book by Les Daniels, p22 The Birth of the Super Hero
"Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's Superman... fought crime, came from another planet, had a secret identity-- and he wore tights. He was also invulnerable and nearly omnipotent. Upon his debut in 1938, Superman immediately became the standard by which all comic book heroes were judged, and most of his successors offered no more than variations on the powers he possessed. Even the term "super hero" is a tribute to his impact and influence: his name became the job description.
The fantastic popularity of this one character guaranteed, and to a large extent defined, the future of comic books. Variations have come and gone, but the typical plot still involves an individual with incredible powers who is devoted to defeating evil wherever it appears..."

western superheroes' outfits are too bright... pero hindi lang naman sila ang mahilig mag-drowing ng triple d cups . But if you ask me, both cultures influence each other greatly. Look at the new line of comics that DC and marvel are putting out,or even the cartoons for that matter, their art is so verrrrryyyyy manga influenced.
najanaja & yamiyo, i agree with your observations wholeheartedly. Americans influenced Japanese animators, particularly the God of Mangga himself Ozamu Tezuka via cartoons like Disney, WB's Looney Tunes & comics strips. On the other hand, Americans have a learned a thing or two, as evidenced by George Lucas's STAR WAR series & the Wachowski brothers greatest creation, THE MATRIX. Both genres influence one another. It's just natural. I collect DC & MARVEL comics, as well as Anime such as Macross, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Samurai-X, Trigun, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam series ( ALL OF THEM ) & much more. I also play console games, PC games & watch any good movie, be it SPIDER-MAN or JU-ON. That's how diverse my tastes are when it comes to arts & entertainment. It also applies to music too. I listen to almost everything, from Michael Buble & Norah Jones down to Tool, Black Sabbath & Ministry & everything in between. OPM faves are Sandwich, Rivermaya, Urbandub, Parokya ni Edgar, Radioactive Sago, ChicoSci, Kamikaze & more. That's all, folks!

oo nga no? Pero may maid naman sila. Si Maritess. Pero don't they wear them under their street clothes? E di napaka-init nun. At kung araw-araw nilang suot yun, may spare kaya sila o di na nalalabahan yun?
i just remembered from spidey 2, peter parker was dirt poor as in, wawa naman sya, kung pwede lang mag-apply na alalay nya for free.. hehehe..
suot nga nila under their daily clothes, but when they do change to their costumes, and go rescue whoever, where do they put their clothes? surely, not under their costumes?

Triple D is kinda extreme but I know where you are coming from there. I guess artists drew it for eye-candy, not realizing how difficult it would be to move with that kind of load. It's not like they could take it off for a while during fights, right?

Siyempre, so they stand out and you can tell right away kung sino ang dapat papansinin!

I actually remember reading this in some comic books.
Superman folds his clothes really small and then hides them in a pocket built into his cape.
Spidey spins a web sack and puts his clothes in it and then hangs it somewhere safe and then he just returns to it.
Sa movie naman, we saw that Batman and Robin keep their costumes in the trunk of their car.
Wonder Woman uses her magic lasso and her clothes magically change ... kinda makes me think of Odo there for a bit ... but that's a different mythology.

Voltes V team also wear tights, but they are not from America. Dana also wear tights... hehe
don't they feel odd wearing those tights. If I was a super hero, I would be more concerned with all those people looking at my thingie than doing my job. Hmmm... what if superman got too much attracted to a sexy woman while doing his job...'wonder what he would do? Maybe that's why he lets his cape be blown in front of him sometimes while doing his pose.
may damit o wala basta "he/she fighting for what is right and helping the weak are one thing that we can call a hero. but, whatever the reason are..." siguro, mas maganda kung may helmet/mask siya. para kahit pink pa ang suot niya at katawa-tawa ang outfit niya hindi siya mare-recognize diba. for whatsort it is, basta we can call him a SUPERHERO ayyyttttttt!

i think everyone just started wearing spandex, and i mean serious spandex, when superman did. he was a hit, so i suppose it followed that his cosume was a good idea cuz it pretty much sold. which is why the director of gagamboy, forgot his name, said in an interview, that he was sick of spandex, but there were no other real good ideas for costumes.
