It was past midnight. He couldn’t fall asleep, didn’t dare fall asleep. He was afraid that if he did, he might wake up and realize that everything that has happened so far was just a dream. Nothing more than a beautiful dream.
She was sleeping peacefully, the light from the moon gliding over her bare back. She looked almost divine, otherworldly, and that thought made him hold on to her. Was he fated to relish this fleeting taste of happiness, a taste and nothing more? This seemed almost too good to be true; no, this is too good to be true. For she, she will only be true to him for this night and this night only. Tomorrow, reality will rush back in and take her away from him.
He almost wished that this never happened. Almost. Maybe he shouldn’t have let her in, crying her heart out like that. Another big fight with her boyfriend in a series of big fights, arguments, and misunderstandings. He couldn’t understand why she was so in love with that bastard. That jerk never treated her right, never understood her, never gave her the love and care that she deserved. And yet, she surrenders to him.
She moves slightly. He envelops her a little more into him, her warmth assuring him that she’s all too real, she’s really here right now, sleeping in his arms. He kisses her hair, feeling the suppleness or her hair in his lips. She’s really here.
All the more he dreaded to sleep. When he wakes up, this fairy tale will be over. She will write this off eventually as an accident. If he’s lucky, a beautiful accident, a special accident, but an accident, nevertheless. All the more he wanted time to stop.
Why can’t she love me instead, he thought.
Why him?
He shudders at his thoughts, tries to block them. No, this taste is all I’m ever going to get. Tomorrow, she will walk out that door and return to her life. I should go on with mine.
He sinks deeper into the pillows, trying to get cozy. Sensing the movement, she opens her eyes. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. Everything’s okay.” He tells her while kissing her hair. “You’ll feel better in the morning…”
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."
