I do not like the idea that China is using this even to show off to the world that they have become a world power.
What makes it worse would be the Obsessive Compulsiveness they are resorting to to ensure that they won't be embarassed like brutally suppressing revolts in Tibet

Actually I think China (it's government, people, businesses) are under a LOT of pressure.. trying to do the best they can in pleasing people and at the same time being stingy and close minded in lots of other stuff and censoring and limiting freedom etc...
Anyway.. if you want to read up more about the olympics.. here's a free guide for downloading. Comments (on the page) are welcome..
Remember the Seoul Olympics? The song "Hand In Hand" (by the band Koreana) still evokes powerful message and subtle nostalgia to some. I don't think it can ever be replicated. Try checking it sa Youtube. The world was less hostile back then

yeah ang galing ni phelps.. and poor phils.. yung only boxing entry natin na - eliminate agad (di ba parang mas marami pinadala last time?).. question.. manny pacquiao is our 'best boxer', bakit hindi sya sinali sa olympics?
have you guys read about the young singing girl and fireworks on tv fiasco?
i haven't seen the particular clip ang naabutan ko lang was the young chinese kids running around to make a picture (*with a help of the lights) + yung mga nag tai chi...that was cool... they say nglip synch lang daw yung bata?
i've seen much of our Philippine delagates' games on cable;others done it with spirit, the rest gone horribly wrong. FEARLESS FORECAST: No medals for the entire RP Team.Mabuhay! You can blame it on GMA and her SONA afterwards....

The officials of a National Sports Associations running our National teams (Philippine Track & Field Association, Philippine Taekwondo Association, Philippine Boxing Federation, Philippine DoTA Association) have a long history of fighting among themselves over who gets to be their heads.
Supposedly 5% of earnings by Gambling Monopoly PACGOR go into National Sports Development as mandated. However, it was revealed only 2.5% percent ends up there.
The amount alloted per athlete by the Government is worth PhP 10000 per month (less than what I earn in that time frame). I bet a higher amount per month is spent for the upkeep of a thoroughbred racehorse vying for the Dubai Derby.
It makes me want to wish Political Wrangling and acts of Corruption were medal sports, we would actually bag more Gold Medals than China. They are already a major sporting in this country and we call them elections.
To elaborate on Chard's answer Manny Pacquiao is an Olympic spectator since he is a professional boxer. That is his occupation; he gets paid huge amounts of money to win.
Boxing is one of the few Olympic sports which still prohibits professionals from competing. Almost all the other sport governing bodies have relaxed their rules. Hence, there is Team U.S.A.'s basketball dream team. Hope this made sense.

I wish that all Philippine sport officials involved in this tragedy should resign right away. They're too ****y and too boastful.Especially Lopez and Puentevilla guy.Nakakahiya sila.
There are supposedly issues with the way Jins are judged.
In a match, there are judges on each corner and at the center table. Their score sheets are averaged to get the final score.
To score points, you would need to score a clean and audible kicks either the front or lateral area of his chest armor above the belt or the front, lateral or above the head. If the opponent visibly flinches from the impact, it's an obvious point.
Problem is that like with call center QAs scoring agents, it is rather subjective

i worked with former members of phil athlete team. silang mga scholars trained long & hard, tapos pagdatingan ng mga sponsors, ipapasok ng mga execs/ committee officials ang kani kanilang mga "manok." sa kanila na mapupunta ang pera & chance to represent the country, pushing the orig scholars aside.
