Re: third question: Yes, but I'll follow Carlos Celdran's must-sees in Manila. I read his blog and I agree with his list. (More particularly, Intramuros muna, tapos CCP, sunod sa Luneta, then Binondo, tapos kain sa Chinatown... XD)

Off-topic: Suzhou Dimsum in Malate is luv. Dapat n'yong subukan.

from the newguy:

Q1: its rizal monument, pinupuntahan ko nung bata ako
-natatanaw ko everyday papuntang adu pag nakasakay sa lrt
-reminds mo of a poetic shorty who is so persistent that he got shot at by spaniards
-about what i mentioned above, back in his days, being persistent is a crime
-another thing..the chunk of rock in the picture looks best in a blue sky..ive seen it.
-the sky looks bluer coz the guy who keeps standing on the rock made it FREE to look at it.

q2: i would.
-crazy poses
-with anybody, even with a stranger (but i will bring sum1 to hold my camera).
-why would i do crazy poses as i please??would it be disrespecting the guy? because i can do so. shorty made me do so. FREE to do so.
-ofcourse crazy poses arent in the nude!mind you

Q3: would i bring a friend.foreigner? i did. way back 1999. to an idiot half american dude named junior.
J: "paul, what are we doing here?its friggin hot!"
P: "were just gonna get some icecream.its the best one"
so, we got hold of em and sit at baywalk(manila bay seaside pa yata un dati)
J: "we got one of those in the states (pointing at the monument)"
P: "No, you don't"
-END of CONVERSATION-
-my point? foreigners arent interested...sad to say.theyre here for boracay, bohol, palawan and yes, mall of asia.
-what to do.MAKE THEM INTERESTED! theyre in our friggin rock! its hard enough to get a hold of a visa, they even (occasionally)require filipinos to sing the star spangled banner!
-they are here!make em SPEAK TAGALOG, EAT BALOT, and tell them the best rock in manila with the best sky at dusk.

im no patriot, pero the word foreigner just ticked me off with sumthing.sorry bout that.

Polskie, being a patriot doesn't mean hating foreigners. As for the rizal monument, baka inisip nung tao eh yung kahawig na Lincoln memorial, at least yung phallic (Fraggle's word) structure. Sana sinabi mo na lang, "walang ganyan sa states!"

Sasagot ako kahit late na!! biggrin

Q1: Rizal's remembrance. Honestly (some people may condemn me for this) but I am one of those people who thinks that Andres B is the real deal. Andres is more of the exact definition of the Pinoy majority. He didn't know how to read, yet he still extracted his viens to learn. He didn't just give up without a fight. Wala lang.. Si Rizal kasi elite eh. full of
etiquette, high society attitudes. Eh parang hindi naman tayo lahat ganun. Basta un. Kasi ba dahil mas peaceful nga ung way ni Rizal kaysa kay Andres at dahil dun, sya ung naging National Hero? Baka nga.. pero kasi I have this sinking feeling na ung slogan, "Pen is mightier than the sword", is way cooler than, "Punutin ang ating Sedula!". Hehehehe..

Q2: Why not?! I am not a fan but he's one of the names sa history books.

Q3: Again, why not?! But I think I will be more likely to show him our museum

And ung tungkol sa prosperity ng Pinas, okay we are better than the other countries. And our government sucks, but halos lahat naman ng gobyerno sa mundo ay mentally retarded. Power is that powerful to change people's perspectives
and principles. We all need a strong stable government that cannot be blinded by power, money and vanity. Something that I am proud of of our country is the effort to change the environment. Biofuel is being welcomed and all that little steps.

Another is the people, naalala nyo dati ung strike ng mga public transportation. As in nag freeze lahat then pagdating ng near noon, PGMA approved their petition. Pansin ko kasi nung papunta ako sa office, there are a number of stranded people sa IPI, then some delivery trucks (ie Nissin) offered them some ride. Diba ang cute? touching.. *hikbi* I overheared them asking, "Saan kayo? Libis?" *sniff*
*sniff*

For the Cow: I don't hate PGMA too. She's the lesser of two evils. I am a bit in awe when I found out that she's one of the powerful women in the world. Come to think of it, she is! She's been ousted a lot times and she still manage to lure her subordinates of not taking the opposition's side. Kudos! She admitted the Hello Garci but still, she sits on her throne. Talk about power! However, I don't agree with everything she does. But she's there and we're here. If we successfully kick her out of the office soon, the next regime would possibly have the same trend. And we would possibly be an unstable country.
biggrin

Aside from Luneta, mukhang maganda ring puntahan ang Rajah Sulayman Park ('yung may malaking fountain at katabi ng Aristocrat sa Malate). I think lately arami nang shows doon na puwedeng panoorin ng mga bumibisita.

I need to refute some of the items you stated:
  • Not all the foreigners are bastards.  Some of them are quite cool.  problem is, they're in Bangkok.
  • And you wonder why we're treated so shabbily abroad.  You get what you give.
  • Actually, we don't take care of them enough.  I mean, on a familial level, maybe yes, but on a town/regional/national level, hell no.

Happy Labor Day.  Hug an activist.

+++

Anyway, this informal study is a behavioral analysis on how us local Manila residents view our historical edifices.  The weird thing is, I got totally different reactions from my online surveys as compared to doing this test live.  The general feedback on the live test was somewhere between hysterical laughter and slight disgust.

Polling together what I've gotten (removing the obvious deviations), I'm now working under the assumption that most of us are indifferent towards Luneta and the Rizal Monument.

More on this later on.

live tests? talking to real people? i was hoping you'd get a better replies coz being "physically involved" will let other things to be considered like manners and stuff and will provide a more favorable
response.

man,...

I'm not surprised that the real survey didn't show a good response, just look at what Lim did to Avenida and Baywalk. Those two areas were already doing good thanks to Atienza, but because they didn't bear his name he had them demolished.

On other news, I think I know how crab mentality was developed, and why it's probably justified.

I have always been an advocate for local tourism and Filipino heritage.  Still, the inspiration for this survey came in the form of a joke.  After a trip to the newly opened Manila Ocean Park, my girlfriend and I were making our way through Quirino Grandstand.  I spotted the Rizal Monument in Luneta from a distance.  I jokingly remarked that I wanted to have my photo taken by the monument, as if I was a tourist.  My girlfriend freaked out.  She refused to even go to Luneta because it was tacky, corny, and had a bad rep.

Now, although the whole thing started out as a joke, her reaction galvanized something within me.  When you think about it, Luneta is supposed to be an important cultural and historical landmark in Manila.  The Rizal Monument is supposed to be our Great Wall, our Taj Mahal, our Merlion, our Burj Al Arab.  And here I was, trying to convince my girlfriend to take my picture beside it.  Was this a simple case of overbearing familiarity?  Was Luneta tainted by its bad (but deserved) reputation?  Or is this a sign of the cultural corrosion we are experiencing as a people?

You tell me.

Medyo corny ata tong sasabihin ko pero kapag nakakalibot ako sa Philippine Landmark, nagkakaroon ako ng "Nasa Pinas Ako" and "I'm Home" - feeling. biggrinbiggrin

At kung meron lang talaga ako mahabang oras, lagi akong nasa Luneta tuwing hapon-gabi. Masarap mag-unwind.

its so sad to think that the youth are slipping away from our roots....i mean...here we are feeling sophisticated and advance yet we fail to look behind us to those who made it all happen...

who to blame?

-the academic community that lacks the idealism to focus on our heritage?
-our parents who are also the same that gives no value to it?
-our rotting society that beleives the ideology of "out with the old..."
-or our selves simply by not caring...

When I was still studying in FEU, one of my class, (Phil. History ata or Rizal) prompted us to visit the National Museum, Museong Pambata and Luneta Park. And it was fun. As in group kami na nagpunta. I even have a souvenir picture by some of the photographers at Luneta (P50 for a 4-5r? pwede na)

I guess, it all depends at your perception on how the country is, and what we could do that really counts.

Ah. Basta, pag may time lang talaga ako ulit, gugustuhin ko magikot sa Manila. ^_^ Kukuha ako ng madaming picture.

Ah, so that's the background story.

I'm from the province. These landmarks, I've only read in books or saw on tv til I went to Manila. So whenever an opportunity comes up, I just grab it and go sightseeing.

Maybe we just really take for granted what's always there. Or, nawawala eventually ang novelty factor.

Or baka kasi nowadays being patriot for some is corny and cheesy. I guess, it is the trend or the media that makes the young young young mind think that way.

It's actually very much related to that, the expenses we pay for survival or success even if it's not ours to pay with.

I remember all these dates i had to memorize from elemntary through high school. only when i got to college did my prof made me realize why those dates are important. dami trivia, tas kinuwento talaga kung ano at bakit ang mga nangyari. very interactive ang mga lessons, as if you really went back in time.

We're all part of the society, even if you're in the minority. We all have a say on all these things. If nobody will take a stand because they all think that nobody cares then, indeed we are a rotting society.

sabi nga ni Ellie Arroway sa movie na Contact: "Funny, I've always believed that the world is what we make of it. " hehehehe..

bakit napaka depressing naman ng mga statements :) cheer up! it is not like may deadline tayo to change the world. Or we are the damnest country in the whole galaxy. We can rant all we want in this forum and to our friends but at the end of the day, all that matters is if we really did make some changes on our own.

Which makes me want to pop the question, how exactly are we going to change the patriotism of the rest of the country?

I think we could start by giving out the right information, and making them see that our country is not as damned as it seems and that if we all work together, then we could make this country a lot better.
