The following is part of an ongoing study I'm conducting.

Tell me what you think of the following picture.  Post the first thing that comes to your head when you see this photograph.  Be as honest as possible.

First thought? Move as close to the monument as possible.

Okay. Second question:
Would you have your picture taken by the Rizal Monument?

No, unless I can break through the cordon and have my picture taken as close to it as possible. More worth the visit.

The country really sucks... Wow.

In Bangkok, it's normal to be trapped in traffic for two hours.  It's gotten so bad, the policemen are trained in midwifery.

In Baghdad, 20 people die everyday because of all the chaos the US started.

Speaking of which, in the US, they are in recession.  People are losing jobs by the thousands.  They been hit by calamity after calamity as well.

The divide between rich and poor is worse in Russia and China.

Pollution is so bad in China, they're required to give special gas masks to all the athletes participating in the Olympics.

Huge chunks of Africa don't have access to water, electricity, medical services, and education.

Lack of Jobs?  Try getting a job in Japan or Hong Kong.

Graft and corruption?  Don't get me started on Africa, Myanmar, and South America.

Everywhere else but the Philippines, gas is worth P100/liter, a burger at McDo would cost P120, and a pack of cigarettes would cost between P60 - P200.  And no, they don't sell per stick.

And this country really sucks?  Wow.  Hooray to you.

Kai: Me too!!! As close as possible. I would even climb the monument just to have shot beside Rizal. But I think that would not be possible.

Psycho: I'm speechless...

Ladies and gentlemen, Roachy is a victim of the "Grass is always greener..." syndrome. It's not his fault, a lot of people think like him.  Who can blame them?  In fairness, it's easy to find something to hate in this country. Starting with the government.

Spoiler

The fact is, compared to the rest of the world, we're not doing too shabbily. True, there are a million things we need to clean up before this country can really go somewhere, but we're in a good spot. It could be much worse.

You have to be thankful for what you have, simply put. Here are certain indicators:
  • The GDP is growing at a fast clip.  True, a lot of it may be speculatory, but this is still a lot better than during Erap's time, when it was dead.
  • Because of the shrinking Dollar, our budget deficit has shrunk as well
  • Bothered about the sudden glut of condo developments?  That means there's a big market.  Think about it: there's a market for buying property valued from P2 to P20 million.  When did that happen?
  • Metro Manila has developed mixed-use areas (residential, commercial, leisure, business) that are gorgeous to look at.  The Bay Area (Pasay), Fort Bonifacio (Taguig), Eastwood City (Quezon City), Madrigal Park-FiliCity-Westgate (Alabang), Rockwell Center (Makati) have started it off.  You can add the revitalization of the Araneta Center and the West Triangle here as well.  Studying some of the plans drawn up, you can expect more areas in Makati and Quezon City to clean up.
  • A decade ago, we had one crummy LRT line.  Now, there are three, with plans of putting up four more.  Not to mention the plans for Northrail and Southrail.
  • Traffic has improved.  Yes, on a normal day, you'll still get stuck, but have you noticed?   It moves.  10 years ago, I would have to leave Parañaque at 5am to make it in time for my 8:30am class in UP.  Now, you can actually leave at 6:30.  I was commuting, by the way.
  • There is a growing number of institutions and organizations that are batting for Pinoy Pride.
  • Etc
Again, there's still so much to clean up and fix.  We're not even 1/4 of the way done.  And it will never get done if we sit on our asses and moan that the Country sucks anyway.  Either you keep quiet, or you do something about it.

I have a friend from South Africa whom I mentioned the country's problems to. She said they had it worse... Crimes are rampant, living standards aren't improving, a large percentage of the blacks are stuck in the past and warring with the whites, and the health situation is worse (rape is rampant because many South Africans believe having sex with a virgin can cure AIDS). Their government isn't doing so much except bicker.

I guess we are indeed lucky.

What's this study for? I'll answer that on May 1.
Meanwhile, third question: Let's assume you have a foreigner friend, and he/she is here on a visit. Would you take him/her to Luneta?

PS: I would have posed closer, but there were guardrails. I was actually leaning on it.

yeah, tenkouken. whenever i feel bad about the country, i compare it with african countries and poof! we're lucky.

Like this food 'crisis'. Food prices have gone up because of overall global prosperity.

I prefer this type of food crisis compared to other food crises caused by famine, war, and irradiated soil.

Of course. A tour of Manila will be in the plan. And we'll probably join one of Celdran's tours. :) Which is pure love.
