It's that time of year when Metro Manila theaters are forced to show nothing but locally produced entries to this event.
It's also that time of year when Filipino mainstream producers to rant about the death of the local film industry while rest assured that they can make movies and not worry that Big-budget Hollywood films would hog box-office sales and for them not to be panned for mediocrity compared to those "masturbatory" upstart independent film makers who really keep this industry alive.
Now is the time to share your rants, youtubelinks, reviews and other comments about the film-pest and this year's enries.

Ahahahahahhahhahaha Once a year lang pero kaabang abang. Once a year pariotic ako pagdating sa pelikula. Mabuhay ang INDI!!!!
Joel Lamangan again. After the debacle that was Zsa Zsa Zaturnah, that overrated hack shouldn't be allowed to direct anything AGAIN.
Yes, Regal Films has three movies in there. Wanna bet all three suck? (Note: Joel Lamangan directed two of them)
Vic Sotto again. Hay. Still, can't argue with all the fans.
Don't you just wish that Star Cinema just put more effort in the MMFF? Sure, their offering will probably be good, but it's nothing great. Star Cinema should give us something great. They're Star Cinema, for Christ's sake!
Honestly, I applaud Bong Revilla's effort to produce movies like "Exodus" and "Resiklo". Now if he will only just stop appearing in them...
Manny Pacquiao in a movie? Heaven help us...
I'm waiting for that police/SWAT movie. The title escapes me now, but it looks intriging.
Go Cinemalaya! Go Cinema One! But remember, not all that is Indie is gold. There's a lot of crap indie films too. Still...
Metro Manila Mayors and Bayani Fernando should not be the organizers. They are politicians and bureaucrats not people who are well acquaninted with what is crap or not. Besides, they're prone to the aggressive lobbying tactics of mainstream producers like Mother Lily.
Mainstream producers like Mother Lily should not use this Pestival and its enforced ban on foreign (mostly big budget mediocre Hollywood-produced) films as an excuse to force movie goers to watch their equally mediocre productions
These mainstream producers should also enlist indie directors, screenwriters and cinematographers for their entries to infuse new creative blood and not muscle them out with their political clout because they're seen as a threat
That SWAT film btw Direk is entitled Banal.

Let the outfits have the MMFF. Think about it; it's all they have left. The Urian and Famas this year should have been an indication that the tide is shifting.
And before you keep dissing the MMFF entries, I would like to point out that one of the directors in "Shake, Rattle, and Roll 9" is Topel Lee. He was in the Indie/MTV scene for the longest time.
As I mentioned in my earlier post, not all the Indie practitioners are worth your time. A lot of them actually truly suck, and most of them can't keep a sked. As much as I LOVE maligning Joel Lamangan (deservedly so), at least Mother Lily knows he'll submit his work on time.
But they produce ART, you will say! Since when did the bigwigs care about that? They're into profit. And the sorry fact is that, as long as Vic Sotto continues to rake in the crowds, he has every right to continue giving us "Enteng Kabisote" until Oyo Boy has grandchildren. It's a business, after all.
And just to end this... Did you actually watch any of the featured films, or did you take a look at the line-up and assume that all of them are prefabricated mainstream crap and will therefore suck? If it's the latter, you really have to change your attitude. Innocent until proven guilty.
(Having said that, I KNOW for a fact that J Lamangan will **** up his works AGAIN. Four years and running!)
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."
Let them have the filmfest but then, I find unsettling the fact that our mainstream filmmakers can only gain the confidence to shell produce en masse when they are in a market with an imposed shortage of Imported films (most of whom have marketing and advertising budgets larger than the total amount all MMFF entrants spent on production of their entries).
This should be a chance to exercise creativity and not stagnate because of the absence of foreign competition during the run of those entries.
Star Cinema has been proven it can provide competiton to foreign stuff with Sukob with its commercially successful run. And it was not the filmfest when it hit theaters.
BTW....
Bwiset, bakit sa January 1 pa ang premiere ng Banal?
Pag ganoon, nood na rin na lang ako ng Resiklo (for the Mecha Combat and not Bong Revilla)

theres only one thing that I hate about this years MMFF.. Di napalabas ung sweeny todd..
Anyway, I think I will only watch resiklo.. Cows right, hindi na sana umaacting si bong sa mga movie na pinoproduce niya.. Or he could appear but not as the main star..
TO truly make a film with a lot of substance and a lot of commercial potential, film-makers should remove the antiquated fags whose choice of substance is the RECYCLED cheesy pakilig stuff, and every time they film, they should at least screen the DAMNED Actors for the script... Goodness sake, enough of the love-team CRAP, even if they're making a Horror Movie, per se, there's a FRIGGING love team....
Cow's right, there's a lot of Gold-plated craps from indies, such as XXX.COM and Gamitan.
As for why mainstream producer stick to such crappy formulas (Love teams and horror flicks) is that they assume the stuff sells well. They also prefer family flicks because whether your in Hollywood or Mumbai, these films are the most profitable as you can get everyone into the theater

Family-oriented (Movies MTRCB rate as G or PG) still do top box offices.
Horror flicks do have a cult following (especially after the release of iconic Asian Horror flicks like the Ring and the Grudge. However, this genre is suffering from the so-called hot pandesal effect. I wouldn't be surprised if moviegovers will start to lose interest in this kind of movie

Anyway, I was forced to watch "Bahay Kubo" because that was the only film my date could get. My thoughts?
I loathe Joel Lamangan. He has been mailing it in for the past couple of years, and he has got to stop.
They had a scriptwriter? Really? Where?
I have all the respect for Ms Maricel Soriano. I really do believe she's a fine actress. She stinks here, but it's not her fault.
Marian Rivera is hot but can't act. And they say Marimar is doing crazy well at the ratings? How brain dead are the Masa anyway?
Shaina stinks.
So does Yasmien
And Rayver, too.
Mark Herras didn't stink but didn't do much either.
Oh looky here. Eric Quizon is trying to act straight again. Awwwwww. Sorry, but no dice.
Eugene Domingo is God, and I worship her. She was the only one in the movie worth watching.
The plot has more holes in it than a GMA teleserye.
Maricel did so much crying in the second half of the movie, she must have run out of bodily fluids. I wouldn't be surprised if she burst into dust after the shoot.
Yes, they had a song and dance number. Goddammit.
So many tuhog shots. The joys of working for Regal. or for Joel Lamangan. Or both.
More caricatures here than a stack of newspapers.
I swore to God I would never, ever, EVER watch anything that Lamangan has ever directed. Once again, I was proven right.
Vic Sotto again. Hay. Still, can't argue with all the fans.
Am so glad we decided not to watch any movies this year.
Yes, Vic sotto again...even if the had Peque Gallaga (tama ba?) to direct it, it's still the same stuff.
You were right about Bong Revilla too. Wish he could just direct and not be in it. I hear it wasn't that great. Bad script and acting pa rin. Effort na lang is a plus.
Manny Pacquiao...stick to boxing!!!
Banal, i hear, was good at the beginning but didn't carry out until the end.
yung mecha designs naman ng resiklo walang originality e ginaya lang naman nila sa tech warrior e
Grabe naman yung pagkademanding ninyo! It's good enough that somebody tried to level up. For now. At least somebody is trying.
Next year, however, it should be much much better.
I guess, one way of saying it is, it's hard for us to make something completely original now since we're way behind the technology and are just trying to experiment now compared to others. Like cow said, it's good that we're trying but there's is still a whole lot of room for improvement.
Maybe if they got better actors...as in people who really know how to act. Concepts are good. Technology can still be worked on. Acting will make a big impact.
While we would love to see better actors get roles. Unfortunately, the Corpos, Producers and Talent Managers think looks are more important than actual talent and beleive majority of the population have very superficial tastes.

Now, before you think otherwise, here's my take on the whole scenario. The powers that be have a point. The Masa is fickle and shallow. How can you experiment with your material when the biggest market won't give you a chance?
You'd probably say that we should watch more indies, or that producers should jump the gun and work with young blood. Yes and No. Take the Cinemalaya and Cinema One filmfests for example. You'd think that, since the films here are much more substantial than the usual fare, it should have done better at the tills. The fact is, outside the festivals, they tanked.
So what am I saying? There is no fast and easy cure for this scenario. You can force feed the masses all the stuff you want, but it won't matter in the short run. The real solution here is to gradually introduce innovations and changes into the system until they become part of the norm. If you don't believe me, take a handful of masa comedy films from the 80s and 90s and compare then to what we have now. There have been improvements. Major ones at that.
The fact is, the old guard is dying out. Viva is relegated to producing home videos, Regal has dropped off the radar, Seiko is dead, and the other outfits from days past are off doing one film a year. The only upstart in the industry right now is Star Cinema, and the directors they hire are young blood. The rules have changed, and most of your old school practitioners have moved on because the industry has left them in the cold.
I believe we will see more mainstream films in the future using indie sensibilities. If for nothing else, the industry has to adapt to survive. The days where you could spend millions to make a crap movie are long past. But don't expect a sudden and immediate change. You will probably continue to see a lot of crap movies over the next few years. But trust me, there are enough people within the system who also wants the change. People like me.
