Great question! I get ideas from my barkada. Unfortunately, we grow up and don't get to spend much time like we used to. Therefore, i don't get that much material to draw. I am not really a writer. My brain doesn't work as much as L's or Pol Medina's. I still do admire them for being able to come up with strips every day and not run out of ideas.
Being observant is good and so is having weird and funny people around you. hehehe... Having a wild imagination helps too.

i've been developing my observational humor as a source of ideas. for example, during the intl nana day, we had to hail a taxi so that chompy can go home. it was raining, so it was hard to hail one. i was thinking who never had a hard time hailing for a pick-up. and then it hit me.

Lion-o. of the thundercats.

just replace the eye of thundera with a taxi sign, thundercats with taxicab, and ho with hoy. cab driver panthro would be sure to come.

Question for Mr. L: Idol, aside from Beerkada and Doug and Kitten, What other works did you...er... work on? Tsaka I would like to ask for a few tips in writing stories. Aside from songs, I have a few stories of my own but I would sure want to hear some advice from one of my idols. Btw, I read your interview on Culture Crash. Inspiring. Thanks. =D.

Bakit di madalas lumabas ang carpool sa manila bulletin?
Hindi na ako nakakapag-drawing ng carpool strips ganon kadalas. Pasensya na po. May office work kasi ako. Dati may oras sa opisina na wala akong ginagawa, kaya pwede pa ako mag-drawing. Pero ngayon wala na talaga.

Syeri Graphics sa Point Zero comics?
Kaibigan ko kasi sila. Kinailangan kasi ng resibo sa Comic Quest para makabenta ng comics. Kaya inilagay yung logo ko dun sa comics niya. Lumalabas na yung "company" ko na "Syeri Graphics" yung nag-publish ng libro nila.

sa tulong ng Sterling (gumagawa ng notebooks, etc) magbebenta sila ng P10 komiks.
5 titles at linggo-linggo ang labas. wow...

Tsismis ko rin na ang Mango komiks ay tatapatan ang kanilang gagawin. hmm...

About Carlo J. Caparas' comics..hehehe..sarcastic comment yun. But you can possibly give him some credit for doing something. I don't think they'll be looking for writers there.

You don't really have to submit works join the artists' den. Join the yahoogroups: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/artistsden/
though it's been quiet there lately.

wow psycho cow vs. polgas? aus un. sana nga magkaroon nun, hehe, other than beerkada, pugad baboy, carpool, and divine comedy are the only comics I read. Uhm san pa po ba aq makakakuha ng copy ng treskada?

some webcomics, like artists den and trek in the city.

tips: avoid being derivative. copy the best ideas/techniques you read in comics, then improve upon the weak points.

One more piece of advice:
Do what you want first. Any drawing syle, any story, just go for it. Worry about being original or interesting later, when you've mastered your style.

Chopsticks book is now available. Chopsticks is made by fellow Manila Bulletin Artist Stanley Chi.
I saw a copy of his book in powerbooks shangri-la. It's published by PSICOM, so i guess it will be available in all major bookstores. It's P110 a copy.

ms lei, ask ko lang, is that a comic book or a plain book (like short stories, novels, etc)? i've read many read many books published by PSICOM and i find most of them interesting... just curious so that i may buy a copy of the book... aww

This is a comic books similar to Beerkada and Carpool. It's a compilation of Chopsticks comic strips. Chopsticks is created by Stanley Chi, published in the Manila Bulletin.

There's "Cels Talk" from Manila Bulletin.

Freely Abrigo who does "Ga & Go" will be releasing a book during the KOMIKON.

"Kikomachine 3" is said to be available in Fullybooked. Haven't seen it yet though.

Read Or Die, the UP Institute of Creative Writing and the UP College of Arts and Letters in partnership with Komikera and the New Worlds Alliance invite you to attend Pasko ng Komiks, a symposium on Filipino komiks. The event is the culminating activity of the 2007 College of Arts and Letters Week. The symposium will bring together komiks writers and artists from different groups and backgrounds along with respected critics.

The event is sponsored by the UP College of Arts and Letters, the National Book Development Board and WikiPilipinas.

There will also be an exhibit of komiks prints from select collections and artists in FC Gallery 2 as well as an open cosplay event featuring characters from comicswhether Filipino komiks, Western comics and graphic novels, or manga and manwha. We would like to invite everyone to participate in the cosplay.

Pasko ng Komiks will take place on December 11 (Tuesday) from 8AM to 6PM at the Claro M. Recto Hall, Faculty Center, UP Diliman. Registration starts at 8AM.
