nakakainis talaga sila! where are the minds that conceptualized enca?

Thank God for Cable TV.

Honestly, I don't give a care for I rarely watch any Local TV for I know it will be very insulting. Same old formula for tele-seryes and cheap-a** renditions of famous foreign movies and show. And GMA-7 is overusing just a few talents... coughRichardcoughGutierrezcoughAngelcoughLocsincough. I know they look good but it's depressing to know that a lot of people are still falling for cheap tricks like these.

Can't blame you for not watching Local TV. Hell, I've directed and written for local stuff, and even I don't watch it. Not to say that I think my own products suck; but it's all ripples in the murk, so to speak.

Um...no.

I wish it were that simple, but it shouldn't be. You see, for every imported show we bring in, a lot of job opportunities are lost. Besides, bringing in more shows from abroad will only make the current situation worse. You think the current crop of local shows are unwatchable? At least local shows are being made.

Besides, as far as GMA7 is concerned, they're just catering to their market by giving them what they want. Or, at least, what they think their audience wants. Same with ABS-CBN (although they seem to be more in tune with what's happening. Just look at Wowowee).

I do agree that, in the short term, foreign shows improve the quality of TV programming. And they also do force local producers to "level up". At the same time, I also agree that GMA7 seems to have no clue whatsoever. No wonder they're losing ground in the ratings war. Officially, ABS and GMA have drawn even, and I think it's only a matter of time before ABS defeats GMA utterly.

What does this mean for us? We will continue to get substandard, shallow, and masa-oriented shows. There will be a few noteworthy exceptions here and there, but that's the short term, sad to say.

Still, there are moves to level up local programming. I am part of one such movement. Don't blame me for not trying. Ripples in the pond, but who knows?

Unfortunately, I don't have cable
But am glad there's Studio 23 and RPN 9 that has good foreign shows. hehehe

I do give credit to ABS-CBN's Komiks for reviving old local comic books and providing trivias/historical backgrounds about the comic they featured. Also for Pedro Penduko. I was able to see only a few episodes and i think it was OK.
Besides that...enough of Kris Aquino and Willie Revillame!!!

I DO RECOMMEND Ang Pinaka of QTV. It's a good survey show. Very informative. It's Sundays 6pm on Channel 11. Anime Overload too in that channel. I just hate how they dubbed Samurai X. Grrrrrr....

Too bad for Atlantika. I thought it was good. I just hate how everyone there loses their memory. My goodness.

Psychocow...may we know what shows you wrote for?

I have to agree that Ang Pinaka is indeed informative...

can't help myself to be glued on my seat whenever I come across that show...

but it rarely happens because we go to mass every sunday at 5:30 pm(sorry off topic)

pansin ko puro GMA shows ang nababash ah?wala lang...pansin ko lang...

I'd bash ABS-CBN shows too - like wowowee. What i do is not watch channel 2 anymore, since i know there's nothing really that interesting to watch in that channel.

Well, give credit Hiraya Manawari and that show that featured Heroes. I wish they bring bach that children's show ATBP. (the one like Batibot) - or bring back Batibot. In fairness, they are good with coming up with children's shows like the science show...uhm...ano nga ulit yun? Sineskwela, was it? and i wish they'd develop more that Epol Apple.

ayun.

I think the reason why GMA is being bashed is because nobody (here) watches (or rarely watches)ABS shows.. kumbaga, pinagtiyagaan ang 7, pero kulang pa rin. :D

Lorie: i know Goong!!! That's princess hours in ch 2. Too bad I only got to watch one episode pa lang (the one where the girl transferred to the palace and started training) so i didn't get to see the guy yet. :( My officemates are all giggly over it though, so it must be romatically good.. being the asian dramas queen here at the forums (wink wink) do you have cds of this? may i borrow if ever? :)

Syeri: I agree, i liked channel 2's children shows.. they should produce more of that..

on the 3 new shows: what the hell is GMA 7 thinking?? really?? if they thought that these are what the people want, who the heck did they ask if they did make a survey.. after i was praising them for Encantadia, Mulawin now this?

I mean, if you're gonna rip off from foreign stuff, at least do it tastefully and NOT that obviously.. di pa ba sila natuto sa captain barbell?? and in fairness, para saan pa yung mga star search ek ek nila if they're not going to give this *ahem* new artists the chance to shine? please lang, sukang suka na ako sa mukha nila richard at angel.. i mean i'm really sorry, i have nothing against them, pero nakaka-umay na talaga.. mag rotate naman sila ng ibang artista..

i think this is the reason why asian dramas like japanese, korean and taiwanese limit their 'shows' to up to 12 episodes (more is already stretching it) and they rotate their actors and actresses.. if the show is really a hit and have such a huge following, then and only then would they make a season 2.. even then, minsan wala pa.. there 's such a craze for asian dramas: japanese, korean, taiwanese, chinese.. wish ko lang the philippines would get a fraction of this attention.. :(

on other local channels: in fairness, mas nanonood pa ako sa QTv.. they really have some good informative shows there.. kahit na mukhang low budget, pero for me ha, parang mas well rounded.. kahit hindi "Big" stars ang mga hosts, ok din..

on foreign dramas: in any case, sana mag palabas sila ng ibang asian dramas naman, particularly japanese dramas.. hehe.. after gokusen, yun na, wala na?

First time I saw the plug for Channel 7's three new shows was before a Filmfest movie. Rarely watch local TV, and shall skip those obvious rip-offs. Let's see them last 3 months.

Studio 23 is my favourite local channel. Used to watch F every Sunday night, because of Amanda. Don't know the reason why it got cancelled. Gosh, I miss that show.

Might watch the first few episodes of the new season of Pinoy Big Brother. Yeah, that's a guilty pleasure of mine.

Studio 23, Kabarkada Ko!

It's still a mystery why they took away Amanda Griffin from TV.

Me and my buddies talked about Channel 7's new shows. I guess it was sparked by seeing an Atlantika(?) episode trailer while eating lunch in an eatery. Atlantika, I have never watched you so I will not criticize. But I wonder why GMA didn't stop there.

ABS is the local channel in the house. My mother likes their lineup better. And my father has only harsh criticisms for anything out of GMA-7, so no choice but to watch ABS and it's sister channels. I remember watching CSI and Smallville on Studio 23. Also watched Breakfast whenever I'm still in the house.

Studio 23, Kabarkada Ko! sana pero may Cable TV.

Personally, I prefer the line-up of shows in ABS-CBN. In fairness to the network, they do produce quality stuff. Their primetime soaps, although nothing fantastic, aren't that bad either. And although we would like to snub Wowowee, I have friends abroad who rave about it. My point? The shows work. We're just not the market these shows are targetting.

We have to realize that, bitch as we might, the networks are waging a ratings war, and whoever gets the biggest share of the pie wins. And sorry to say, the biggest chunk of the audience pie belongs to the 40++ female C, D, E market. In short, masa-level mothers. Approaching this academically, this is why ABS is winning back the market share it lost a couple of years back. If you were in that demographic I just mentioned, what do you think you would watch? Maging Sino Ka Man or Lupin?

So what does this mean for us? At least there's Studio 23. And UHF. And cable.

when they're basically the same.

Using cow's analysis, ABS is targeting masa and older people while GMA is targeting young (masa?) people.. with regards as to which audience watches more tv is still unclear for me.. with the previous ultra disaster.. i thought that wowowee was exploiting the poor peoples' idea of a quick money... if you haven't noticed, most of the people who watch wowowee want to get money.. and most of the balikbayans/tfc subscribers who watch there, go and give out money in order to be shown on tv and greet their loved ones live.. i sort of applaud abs with what they are doing of helping people out financially, but i personally prefer the saying: Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, you feed him for life.. i guess my point is, it's not enough for them to help people once or twice, i think it would be better if they could really help more on how they could make a living by themselves and not just hoping for some quick money...

LORIE: yipee!!! sana we could meet.. hmm.. when ka free? text you? text me? :D I'm willing to swap dvds with you, if you want.. PM kita.. :)

GMA has been targeting the male masa audience as of late. That's the reason QTV came into being; if you noticed, QTV targets primarily a female market, with some exceptions.

Personally, I feel GMA is sticking to "fantaseryes" because of the huge success of Mulawin. Lately, though, I think it's been a case of flogging a dead horse. I think the genre is done for the moment. (No, I don't know why Super Inggo exists either)

Regarding Wowowee naman, yes it's pretty much a "dreams come true" type of show, but what more can you ask? I'm all for the "teach a man to fish" mentality (really, I am. I hate false charity), but we can't expect shows like Wowowee to get a moral streak just like that. It doesn't make for good TV. At least there are other shows out there that are more in the "teach" vein (Like that show with Amy Perez that airs after "Magandang Umaga Bayan"). It doesn't make for primetime viewing, but at least it's there.

On Koreanovelas, some of them are quite good. And frankly, acting-wise, ang layo ng ilang Koreanovelas sa mga local teleseryes. I love the way na nakakapagpakilig ang mga Koreano, sa tingin pa lang or even the smallest of movements. Not like local TV or latin soaps, na super-OA sa acting. But we're learning; that much I can see in small doses in ABS soaps.

Maybe I should just state it out loud here that I really, really, REALLY hate GMA primetime. Their shows are terrible! They cannot tell a story to save their lives, their performers are horrible, and everything is in excess. Hey, at least the production designs are nice.

But what about us? There are many factors why there aren't more shows targeted towards our market. Believe me, we've had so much trouble making shows because of the following reasons:

1. Myopia: Most producers can only see as far as their wallets. If it doesn't make lots of money, it's not worth it. They don't see the bigger picture.

2. Aversion for risk-taking: This is also a problem in the advertising industry. Basically, producers and advertisers will only support tried and tested formulas. They rarely reward risk-takers or shows that go beyond the norm.

3. Lack of imagination: Most producers thik within a very small box; rarely do we see local shows that are "out-of-the-box".

4. The MTRCB: Our board of censors is paranoid, old-fashioned, and stupid. A lot of good content is filtered out because the MTRCB thinks people are too stupid to know what's good and bad for them.

5. Financial weakness: No money, no shows. That simple.

and the biggest reason of all...

6. Lack of supporting Networks 2 and 7 are locked up in their battle. QTV is producing their own shows (on shoestrings), ABC 5 keeps putting their eggs in one basket (only to keep dropping that basket), RPN 9 is practically "Jack TV-lite", and NBN 4 and IBC 13 are hopelessly mired in red tape and dirty politics to make any inroads. Of all the channels, only Studio 23 is worth anything to third party producers, and they can only take on so many shows.

I don't like the new shows of GMA never liked Captain Barbel, Bakekang etc. To think they're exploiting the girl who wore nose prostethics by giving her a new show Princess and Charming of course, the girl is still required to wear the prosthetics.Showing Lupin with Richard Gutierrez is like the last straw. I love Lupin too much that it would really kill me that it is being ruined by GMA.

It's not that I'm a big fan of ABS, but since I work for an account that provides Sattelite Programming in the States. I've noticed that lots of Pinoy would rather get the TFC package as they watch more ABS shows like the much maligned Wowowee. To think that I rarely watch that show, I'd prefer that than watching another version of Sing A Song.

Studio 23 is more of my channel, at least I'll be able to watch more updated shows. And sa kanila ko ulit napanood ang mga old movies thanks to Lunch BoxOffice. Thanks to them aSame with QTV,  ok ang Ang Pinaka and Pulso ng Bayan except that since it's from GMA I couldn't forgive them for murdering Samurai X.

Hay, Thank God for DVD's and PC with Internet

aling version ba ng Lupin yung gagayahin ng bagong show? yung lupin na pinalabas sa GMA (yung pamali-mali) or yung "sophisticated" na lupin (debonair na kleptomaniac)?

Whatever version they're doing, you can guarantee I won't be watching it. And their target audience doesn't really care about the plot or version. I think the crew behind the series thinks: "Makita lamang si Richard Gutierrez ay sapat na sa kanila."

We don't have cable at home so expect me to know only local shows (except for my pirata dvd9s here at home).

ABS-CBN 2 -> I don't watch shows here. I've tried watching once (PBB 2, I think ) but people here at home started getting noisy and I was left watching tv alone. As a result, I'm always OP whenever my classmates are talking about its shows. They're like, "Oh, hanggang dito lang ang usapan. HIndi maka-relate yung isa dyan" or something like,"Oy, tama na yan. *whispers: tahimik na yung isa*"

GMA 7 -> I used to defend GMA everytime my classmates and friends bash this channel. I used to like their shows but now, sigh. Before, they had sooo much telenovelas, then anime, then fantaseryes and now, rip-offs. Grrr... News-oriented shows are better here, though.

RPN 9 -> It became a huge part of my childhood (including ABC 5 and IBC 13). Now, the only shows being watched here are smackdown or raw. Yeah, miss universe pageant is also counted.

Studio 23 -> Yeah, I like this tv station. There are lots of american series that people who have no cable connection could watch. At least, we become updated with tv shows (examples are CSI, Charmed, Smallville, etc). I forgot. Now that MTV Philippines hasn't renewed its contract with MTV Asia (which resulted to the signing off of mtv asia), MYX is now our source of music videos.

QTV 11 -> Better than GMA 7. Most anime cartoons (asian shows too) are new and good . The local shows here are also of good quality and definitely, more informative and worth watching than those shows of GMA 7 (One very good example is "Ang Pinaka" which Megara and I watch regularly).

And yeah, I agree with twistedkai that dvds and pc with internet are really helpful to us.

Thanks for the web address. I checked a blog by a  GMA writer and apparently it was supposed to be based with LUPIN (anime) except that it would not look good with anime fans and R.G.'s fans as well. So they're just loosely using LUPIN(anime) and mixing it with pinoy traits.
