Okay, seriously, kung gusto mong mabaliw, read anything by Ernest Hemingway. "The Sun also Rises" is a good start. Try reading the following as well: "Lord of the Flies", "The Alchemist", and "Trainspottting".

Whiz: read The Catcher in the Rye.Holden's cool...kaya lang i don't like him that much...he reminds me of me e.haha.

Cow: The Alchemist was a good read...Tunog Biblikal...are all PC's works like that?i got Veronika Decides to Die Lined up in my "Books to read" kase..lalang...

I have read in HS, as required readings : The Little Prince, Jonathan Livingstone Seagull, The lorf of Flies, Emma, Pride and Prejudice, and at least 2 short synopsis of Shakespeare among others. Not to mention El Fili and Noli me tangere.

If I were to recommend a classic to be read it will be : The Little Prince and Young Fu and the river Yangtze.. (ndi ko matandaan yung buong correct title.. )

Porky: No, I found "Veronika..." much, MUCH better. It's my fave PC book. Try to get your hands on "By the River Piedra, I sat down and wept" as well. Truth be told, I found "Alchemist" too preachy, but it's a good intro to PC kasi.

Lorie: I didn't understand "The sun also rises" the first time I read it either. Weird ang style ni Hemingway; part rambling, part stream of consciousness. Hemingwey did force me to ante up on my analytical skills though, and I'm a better reader for it.

"Alice's Adventure in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll

"Vanity Fair" by William Makepeace Thackery

"Gone with the Wind"

"Great Expectations" and "David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens

you can always spot me in the classic section sa bookstore... hehehehe

if you like paolo coelho then you should try eleven minutes.. its kinda different from PC's usual theme na reflection and learning more about life ek-ek..

yah the catcher in the rye was good.. one of my favorites..

stephen king's the shining is a good read..

nakabili pa yata ako ng sequel nun. yung "Scarlet" but i just hate her character. ayaw nga ng lalaki sa kanya pinagpipilitan pa niya ang sarili niya. she will do anything para lang mapalapit sa guy.

I aqlso remember "Madame Bovary". Heto rin... yung asawa ng main character na doctor.... hindi rin nakokontento sa kanya.. naghahanap pa ng iba tapos binaon pa sa utang ang pamilya para masunod ang luho...

i also love "Secret Garden" kahit na pambata but it made me cry...

If you're up for something regency peiod (in other words lighter than Shakespeare but just as nice and mushy) read Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Northhager Abbey, or anything by the Bronte sisters Wurthering Heights, Jane Eyre

Heathcliff and Mr. Darcy are two literary figures no person shouldn't meet.

Secret Garden is nice we got assigned that some years back and it was cute in a way.

Edgar Allan Poe is pretty good.

There was this one book that maybe a bit kiddy but is pretty entertaining, The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. Some very interesting characters there.

I agree with Sophie's World, Jostein Gaarder can get boring but the things he discusses are still very interesting. Some other more modern ones would be Fight Club, Ben Okri's The Famished Road, and any of Neil Gaiman's books.

Someone mentioned Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, interesting fact, Lewis Caroll turns out to be a bit crazy. He actually saw the White Rabbit in front of him yelling "I'm late! I'm late for a very important date..."

For a more contemporary touch, you can try anything by Nick Hornby. Start with "High Fidelity" and "About a Boy". And whatever you do, read it first before watching the movie versions (Although "High Fidelity" the movie was pretty okay)

As a child, I loved Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
