Personally, if your faith is not that intact, you'll believe THE DA VINCI CODE. I'm not a catholic, but i don't think it's necessary to denounce it. If the archbishops really want their members to avoid watching it, give the movie a cold treatment. Don't mention it on sermons; it will just attract more people. Denouncing it will just result in more people watching it AND believing that fiction as truth.
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."
You're right...it's only a fiction...however, the MTRCB should have an age limit on that film. Still though, Lorie, you did the right thing: you conditioned yourself that it's only a fiction.

repost ko lang dito yung reply ko sa isang mailing list ko about DVC being "banned" daw dito.. and about the RC..
-----------------------------
first, i've seen no proof (yet) that the movie is indeed going to be banned kahit pa may mga protest ang isang anti pornography group (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Da_Vinci_Code_(film)#Philippines). on the contrary, mukhang tuloy na tuloy nga. baka naman this is just one of their way to create more buzz for the movie, not that it needs any more of that. :p According to the release dates of the movie from amazon (http://www.amazon.imdb.com/title/tt0382625/releaseinfo), the philippines is one of the countries were the movie will be released first. May 17, 2006. China has approved the film to be shown in their country (http://www.clickthecity.com/movies_article.asp?p=1053) and we all know how strict China is even if they are not a pre-dominantly catholic country.
im not a very religious person, nor am i a big fan of the catholic church but i happened to watch on tv a statement issued by a representative of the catholic church (i think he's from cbcp) and/or from an opus dei member. THey're not crying out for the movie to be banned or for the novel to not be read by people. In fact, (and this is where they really impressed me), the guy admitted to having read the novel several times to study it. he said he knows that people can't be forced to not watch the movie, or to not read the novel. but due to the very highly controversial topics of da vinci code that might shake a person's trust and beliefs, they are more than willing to discuss with the people the side of the church. they acknowledge that da vinci is fictional, that's why they have facts to back it up for those who might have questions.. to quote:
Monsignor Pedro Quitorio, spokesman for CBCP, said bishops view "Da Vinci Code" as "a work of art and not of Science or History so they do not see it as a threat to the teachings of the Church." "If the faith of the people is strong, it would not be destroyed by one novel. Both the book and movie are presented the way it should be - a fiction - so the people would not be afraid," Quitorio told reporters. (http://www.newsflash.org/2004/02/hl/hl103995.htm)
im glad that we're in an age were religion is starting to understand that their role is to guide people, not to dictate us on what to do. the church is open-minded about it, i hope we can be too. :)

some priest says offensive daw and yes offensive nga kasi it questions the divinity of christ.
nabalita nga dito sa University of the East (recto mla.) may humanities prof daw na nagtapon ng kanyang last supper pic after makapanood ng pirated dvd pero kelangan nya pa ba gawin to e purely fiction and ang mga controversies dito like the gnostioc gospels, knights templar and yung issue if married ba si XT kay mary magdalene ay matagal ng issue to
s2chard: you are right...God has a purpose why He allowed only 66 books to be canonized (I'm talking the 1611 king james Bible).
On the topic: why will that professor throw the Last Supper pic just because he watched DVC. There are many fictions. Will you throw your mickey mouse poster (for example) just because mickey mouse is not real.
Personally, that prof has already seeds of doubt in the deity of Christ even before he watched DVC. That fiction only reinforced it.
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."
yun ngang DVD na galing Quiapo,as it was shown in the news contains the documentary about DVC....grabe pirated na nga peke pa...redundant piracy..hahahahaha
ayos lang na gawing R-18 yun...sabagay kailangan talaga ng maturity sa panonood nito...so if the movie is R-18,it will not be shown in SM Malls kasi nga di ba di na sila nagpapalabas ng R-18 movies...
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."
yesterday i bought a pirated dvd from a moslem guy sa city hall ng mandaluyong pag pasok p lang ng office ng vicemayor syempre isa lang ang hanap ng lahat may: ABDUL may Da Vinci Code ba? the cd fifty pesos lang naman half ng price sa Quiapo pero ok yung CD ayaw nya mag PLAY tumatalon lang naman!!!
about sa mga issues sa da vinci code old issues na to the gnostics, gnostic gospels, mary magdalene, the holy grail, knights templar etc.
Yup...divinity of Christ. By the way, have you watch the original "Jesus Christ: Superstar" and "The Last Temptation of Jesus Christ"? They have two things in common: they're indirectly saying that Jesus and Magdalene have a sexual contact (in Jesus Christ: superstar, magdalene sang "close your eyes, close your eyes, and relax think of nothing, tonight".)
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."
ngayon pa lang ang showing ng dvc so how can there be pirated copies yesterday? i think you were pertaining to the dvc secrets told or something like that..
yes ate lei there are pirated da vinci codes DVD...
pero ang laman,iba...they just made use of the movie's pictures or promotional material in the cover of the DVD but the truth is that it contains the documentary from the National Geographic or something about the Da Vinci Code...
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life."
Yup...divinity of Christ. By the way, have you watch the original "Jesus Christ: Superstar" and "The Last Temptation of Jesus Christ"? They have two things in common: they're indirectly saying that Jesus and Magdalene have a sexual contact (in Jesus Christ: superstar, magdalene sang "close your eyes, close your eyes, and relax think of nothing, tonight".) That's why i'm no longer suprise with the film.
yah i agree with you nagsimula kasi to sa gospel of mary magdalene- a gnostic gospel sbi nila dito jesus kissed mary magdalene sa lips the gnostics believe that jesus is a man just like sa gospel of philip for them Mary above other apostles known to represent the important figure of Sophia- the female syzygy of Christ
for them the physical (our body) is bad, the inner spark or yung soul natin yun yung good
LORIE: ah oo, nakita ko ang mga pirated dvds na yan.. pero i know na hindi sya yung movie.. kahit na sabihin pa nung nagbebenta kasi nakalagay naman sa cover na it's about unveiling of dvc or the documentary ek ek nga.. hehe..
one thing i learned from dvd sellers, they dont really know what they're selling so do NOT always trust what they say.. :D
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."
mikel11: i don't know about the details of gnostic gospels, but i know gnostism...I have researched New Age Movement back in my undergraduate years
gnostic gospels- eto yung sinulat ng mga gnostics version nila ng faith kaya pag isinamamo sila sa 4 present gospels natin (chosen by bishop ireneus during the christian and not catholic prosecution) maloloko ka talaga.
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."
My hypothesis is right: New Age Movement and Gnostism is really interconnected...I remember the Gnostic gospel...You are sort of creating your own gospel...It's like virtual reality in book form.
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."
i've read the book and i found it good fiction. however, i didn't like the ending.
nakaka-relate ako sa concept of symbolism. i find it fascinating, among other things tackled in the book.
ang problema sa DVC is that sa foreword/intro ni dan brown, sinabi nya na accurate or factual (ano nga ba sinabi nya? can't remember exactly) ang mga depictions nya ng certain aspects in the book (like opus dei). so delikado yun sa mga kabataan or those na very gullible. as some of us may know, maraming mali at inaccuracies sa mga sinulat nya. funny thing is that he actually believes the ideas that he wrote about, as revealed in national geographic's interview with him (yung secret bible week last april na sinubaybayan ko talaga). at sa documentary na yun ng nat'l geo, very flimsy ang bases ni brown ng supposed facts nya. marami pa ngang wala talalgang basehan.
the movie, on the other hand, was better than the book, especially the ending. hindi conclusive. it was executed well such that it is really all up to the viewer how to take it. the best ang scene wherein robert langdon (tom hanks, na idol ko, sobra) asked sophie what the descendant of christ would do regarding Faith (something like that). kaya hayun, ikaw, ano ang iisipin at gagawin mo?
another thing... always, ito ang sinasabi ng philosophy teacher namin, kapag magdedebate on something, wag gamitin ang bibliya o ang relihiyon bilang basehan ng iyong argument. kasi if you include that, it's really about faith at wala namang dapat debatehan dyan. nasa sa iyo yan and you can't impose it on other people.
DVC was just another way to make us take a look at our faith. they sure can put up various theories to discount jesus' divinity but what's important is what christ represents, what christ taght, what really makes the world go round --- LOVE.
