First it was Terri Hatcher's character on Desparate Housewives asking if a doctor got his medical degree from the Philippines.

Now, this.....

BBC apology demanded for racist show

MANILA, Philippines -- The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) should apologize for airing a segment of a comedy show last month that was a "racist, humiliating, and disgusting" portrayal of a Filipina domestic helper, a lawmaker at the House of Representatives demanded Monday.

Akbayan partylist Representative Risa Hontiveros also asked the Department of Foreign Affairs to file a complaint against the British government so that the latter would "look into the issue and correct the sickening joke."

Hontiveros was referring to a skit shown on "Harry and Paul" aired on BBC on September 26 that was also posted on
youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL9KrTGx28E.

In the skit, a postman approached comedian Harry Enfield, who was agitated and was shouting at someone, and asked him what was going on.
It turned out that the co-host Paul Whitehouse was seated on a chair on his lawn and beside him was a gyrating young girl in a grey uniform and an apron.

Harry then told the postman that he was shouting at his Filipino maid to do her job and get his friend Paul to mate with her.

He kept ordering the girl to gyrate and dance in front of Paul and even instructed her to "hump him." When an indifferent Paul stood up to go inside the house, Harry scolded the Filipina telling her to get out.

The scene ended with the postman sidling up to the Filipina and whispering to her as they walked off together.

"It was revolting. It was a disgusting and insensitive and racist attempt to satirize a scene of exploitation," Hontiveros said.

She added that the show "trivializes an act of abuse commonly experienced by Filipina workers abroad."

"This has to be corrected, otherwise, it would become easy for other media outfits to use Filipina workers abroad as an object of sexual ridicule. The media should be a partner against human trafficking and not an unwitting promoter of abuse because of insensitive and racist portrayals of women in trafficking," she said

Well, the Pinoys will have the last laugh.

If Paul Whitehouse, Harry Enfield, the wirters, directors and crew of that series do make it to old age, it would be Filipino nurses and caregivers who will be caring for them in the hospital or nursing home.

as you can see, each country had different kinds of humour. For instance,SNL,Colbert or Jon Stewart where they knock-off their politicians whatever they want without getting in the front page the next day unlike sa atin na either laman ka ng dyaryo o ang dyaryo ang magiging laman mo.Freedom of expression and of the press,i'd say.We all know that we also knock-off other foreigners' shoes too like making fun to the Bumbays,Caucasians,Black or some of our native people(see some of our local comedies). At least, hindi sila nagrereklamo dahil siguro sila nanonood sa atin.Konti lang dito sa atin ang liberal-minded.I've seen some episodes of Harry and Paul through the web,and their jokes were notorious and straight-forward.I guess, that's what we call British humour(masyadong vulgar pati ang kanilang Queen walang ligtas sa comedy skits nila) but my concern is that we're facing ignorance on both sides.Deny or undeniable mistakes. One theory is that, some Brits doesn't know we're sensitive and conservative people unlike them, and some of us don't know much about Brit humour, hanggang Mr. Bean lang tayo.Lilipas din 'to just like the Desperate Housewives incident.

There is a wide spectrum of irreverent British humor and we have been exposed to it on free tv. Other than Mr Bean, we have seen shows like the The Thin Blue Line (a Police Sitcom starring Rowan "Mr Bean" Atkinson), the Benny Hill Show ( a gag show on almost the same level as the blokes on Harry and Paul) and even the motoring magazine show Top Gear (TG host Jeremy Clarkson took as much flak for his commentary as the number of bombs that fell on London in WW2)

While we can easily dismiss the whole tirade as a knee-jerk reaction the way we dsimiss the sitcom as lowbrow crap, we cannot deny that it put Filipinos in a bad light even if it was made for a particular audience

dyosko. we're just sensitive (i mean Filipinos in general). the next thing they should do is to stick to local shows na lang.

try nilang manood ng little britain or even mad tv.

meron pa po tayong dapat mas isipin tulad nang 51 peso per liter ng gas pa din na hindi na bumababa despite the 90 dollar per barrel.

if they're really watching foreign movies and tv shows, there are countless number of these things already. take family guy for example na palabas sa jacktv. maraming times nang napapagtripan ang filipina maid dun. what happened with that?

and that's brit comedy. Dyosko. Hardcore yung mga yun except that stupid Comedy Inc.

I didn't catch the entire news segment, but I think the British govenrment already gave a statement that they won't be doing anything as they do not put a reign to such things. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

they kinda made hugas kamay which is not surprising and equally right. hopefully ganun din naman dapat dito sa pinas na may independence ang mga kung ano anong bagay.

anyhoo... nung pumapel ba si teri nun, yung american embassy ba nag apologize?

and nice strip L, though a Gaiman-Rowling tandem is also feasible. malapit na malapit sa punchline mo.

biggrin

The last I heard about this is that they already issued an apology in the newspapers, but the people who filed the complaint said that since it was done on television, so must the apology.

What are the main Advantages of Autonomous Mobile Robots?

1. Flexibility - Increased
Autonomous Mobile Robots have a flexible, dynamic automation due to their dependence on cameras as well as onboard sensors. Autonomous Mobile Robots can design their own pathways from Point A to Point B within a facility. This lets them avoid obstacles and instead of following pre-determined routes. Autonomous Mobile Robots can also be used to complete new tasks faster than other automation technology that typically require more work and time to change the programming. Check out this lowpad.com">Order picking robot info for more.

2. Safety Improved
Autonomous Mobile Robots are packed to the gills with sensors and cameras. These cameras and sensors allow the Autonomous Mobile Robot to read and understand its environment. This lets it move around the facility without disturbance from other people, infrastructure and even the product. In contrast, machines operated by humans like forklifts don't have any safety mechanisms built-in and ultimately rely on the input of humans. Whereas a human operator always has the possibility of becoming exhausted or distracted, which can lead to an accident but these risks are not an issue when using Autonomous Mobile Robots. Autonomous Mobile Robots can be used to perform repetitive tasks, and decrease human errors. This significantly increases the security.

3. Quick Implementation
Autonomous Mobile Robots are able to be operational during an operation within between four and six weeks dependent on the particulars of the operation. This is particularly true when the device will need to communicate with the software for warehouse execution and picking. Even on the high range it's a short amount of time, especially when compared against other technologies. A goods-to-person system (G2P) can take over a year to implement.

4. Scalability
Autonomous Mobile Robots are simple to work with in a factory. They are able to utilize modular deployment methods that allow users to start with only a few units then increase your capacity as the size of your operation expand or your requirements alter. This avoids a huge initial investment. Instead of buying an entire set of Autonomous Mobile Robots all at once it is possible to purchase smaller units and increase the number of units you have. You can reduce capital costs by deploying modularly, so you can pursue different projects while you assess the impact of Autonomous Mobile Robots and decide on next steps.

5. Facilities are simple to transfer between
Some operations may not be prepared to explore automated options when they are aware that the need to move into a new facility is imminent. This is logical. Why create a new system when it can be removed in the two years following the time when the construction of the new facility? Autonomous Mobile Robots can be utilized in these scenarios to bridge the gap. Autonomous Mobile Robots can be deployed swiftly and easily between facilities, that allows for automation in the short-term. Businesses that intend to run in the near-term can benefit from Autonomous Mobile Robots.
