anoynymous: about GMA not running anymore, well, that's good news (I just hope she or those around will not make a way to extend her term on a technical basis). I don't have anything against her, but as Robin Williams said, "politicians are like diapers; they need to be changed frequently"

MANILA, PhilippinesGovernment troops in Maguindanao will have extra-fancy fare for dinner in the coming days, thanks to some businessmen from General Santos City who sent them frozen tuna in support of their ongoing pursuit of Ameril Ombra Kato, a morale booster amid allegations that they were behind some human rights violations in war-torn Central Mindanao.
Soldiers are used to having modest meals in the field that normally include canned sardines, rice, and biscuits. And they don't bring bottled water. They drink from streams or wait for rain.
In addition to the tuna, rice, assorted canned goods, vitamins and medicines and toiletries, the soldiers are also to receive P50,000 worth of cellphone load.
It wasn't immediately known how many kilos of tuna will be landing on the soldiers' dinner table -- or on the road or mountainside during operations -- but the treat was sure to boost their morale, Armed Forces spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Torres, Jr. said on Thursday.
The tuna was among the donations that local governments, the private sector, and government financial institutions have recently sent to the military as a show of support to the troops fighting in Central Mindanao, Torres said.
Government forces have been on the offensive for over a month to capture Kato, Abdullah Macapaar alias Commander Bravo, and Ameel Sulaiman Pangalian alias Commander Pangalian -- all of the so-called renegade base commands of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
Bravo, Kato, and Pangalian led atrocities in North Cotabato, Lanao del Norte, and Saranggani province in protest of the scuttled signing of an agreement between the Moro secessionist group and the government that would have defined a Bangsamoro homeland.
"It's very encouraging to be getting support from all over. It is very encouraging that a lot of people understand what kind of mission they are doing there," Torres told reporters in Camp Aguinaldo.
"The message sent here is they fully support the military's operations against the lawless MILF groups," Torres said.
The General Santos businessmen, who want to remain anonymous for security reasons, donated the tuna to the 601st Infantry Brigade.
A number of local leaders in Maguindanao have also sent sacks of rice to the brigade.
Torres said that another group of businessmen from Davao sent boxes of vitamins, assorted canned goods, rice, sardines, and toiletries to the troops of the 602nd Brigade under Colonel Alejandro Estomo that is pursuing Bravo in the Lanao del Norte front.
A pharmaceutical company, Macropharma, along with the Philippine International Trading Corp. (PITC) donated 200 units of plasma expander, a first-aid fluid that would help soldiers survive longer when severely injured by replacing lost blood.
Torres said the plasma expanders would complement the military-issued life saver kits issued to squads in the field.
The plasma expanders will be distributed to the soldiers in the frontlines, Torres said.
"There is an instruction to give these donations to the soldiers in the frontlines. These would complement our squad's first-aid kits," Torres said.
Torres added that government financial institutions have donated P50,000 worth of mobile phone loads for the seven brigades operating in Central Mindanao.
"It will be up to the commanders how to divide the load. Pasa load na lang siguro," Torres said.
The AFP has come under fire after soldiers were accused of ransacking evacuees' homes and shops in the abandoned Barangay Dapiawan in Datu Saudi Ampatuan in Maguindanao and launching attacks in Barangay Tee in Datu Piang also in Maguindanao, that resulted in the deaths of seven civilians.
The military leadership said it would investigate the allegations.
Torres said that residents in the two fronts of the AFP offensive -- Lanao del Norte and Maguindanao -- have mixed feelings for the military and the MILF.
"Some of them are relatives or friends of MILF fighters but they are not our targets especially if they are unarmed," Torres said.
