The world is at an all time digital high. In the Philippines, a huge number of hotels, cafes and restaurants have started following the Wi-Fi trend. Schools have also begun offering free Wi-Fi connection at designated areas, if not the whole campus. However, this connection also has a habit of popping out where you least expect it.
If youre a Wi-Fi nut whos feeling a bit religious, youll be glad to know that some churches are now equipped with accessible Internet connection. Although it would be best to stow away your lap top during mass, here are some places of worship you might want to spend your Sundays at.
Parish of the Risen Christ (Smokey Mountain) Smokey Mountain is not like what it used to be. From the efforts of the church and various civil society organizations, the former dumpsite is now a thriving community. That and people apparently can now access Wi-Fi at this incredible and one-of-a-kind church. The church area in the Municipality of Boljoon reportedly has Wi-Fi as well.
Technology and nature do mix
The famous Burnham Park in Baguio is probably now famous for something else. You can simply find yourself a spot and hook your lap top up for an Internet fix although some sources say that you have to ask for the username and password from the office first to access it.
Another odd place to access the Internet is the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife over at Quezon City. According to the Web site of the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau, there are two main Wi-Fi hotspots in the area. One is located near the Wildlife Rescue Center while the other is in selected function halls in the visitors center near the Lagoon.
From hospitals to funeral homes
One thing hospitals and funeral homes now have in common is a decent Internet connection. These days, more and more people in the service business are realizing just how much more they can make people more comfortable.
According to Eric Casanova, network administrator of The Medical City in Pasig, the hospital is working to make their Wi-Fi connection more accessible to patients. As of the moment, they are currently providing airborne access to patients on the 15th floor. Cards are available at the cashier.
St. Lukes Medical Center in Quezon City is also gearing up to give their patients more than just health care. While the only Wi-Fi connection is currently only available to patients at the International Patient Care Center (located at the first floor of the main hospital building), there seems to be a move to give other departments access as well.
This might seem strange to you but funeral homes have also started offering Wi-Fi access. Lets just say that its available to those who really need it. Kidding aside, check out St. Peter Funeral Home in Quezon Avenue and the Sanctuarium at Araneta Avenue. St. Peter also offers online video streaming for families, relatives and friends who are unable to make it to the service.
So far, these are only some of the odd places this writer has discovered. With the Filipinos growing interest in technology, there are probably a good dozen more strange places that are hooked up with a Wi-Fi connection. However unlikely they are, this could be a sign of a more technologically-advanced future for the whole country.
Yup, we have hotspots in parks, Churches and even in Funeraryas. Where else can you find unlikely WiFi spots other than Dean Alfar's office?

An internet shop. Ang kapatid ko hindi pumapasok sa shop na iyon at imbis ay nakatambay sa labas (mas malakas ang signal ng WiFi sa labas). Then again, may internet connection na nga tapos may WiFi pa, paano 'yun?
