i took taekwondo training 5 years ago. I had the same coach as Toni Rivero (yung nasa olyimpics...)... Hanggang yellow belt lang ako. wahehe
I had this (traumatizing?- hindi rin) experience on the first time I went sparring in Zobel. Ginawa ba namang kalaban ko high blue belt?!?! Wll anyway, i was happily sparring (I didnt stand a chance, btw) tapos nag-roundhouse kick ako. Somehow, my big toe made its way to her front tooth. Nasty. Buti nalang walang nangyari sa ngipin niya. Pero nasugat yung toe ko. Para ngang may natanggal na chunk eh.
Fraggle Rock: Im not discouraging you, though, to learn taekwondo. Its tedious, but fun! I just had to quit because i had no time.
as long as you can have resources not to fight, do not fight...
never ever provoke someone...
i actually wanna take up judo. ayaw lang ako payagan. feeling ko ang saya niya... slamming the mat and all...
fraggle: hmmm...takewondo's a good sport but expensive. Ang dami pang kailangan na equipment (shin guards, helmet, body guard, uniform. And the taekwondo association in our country nedds to work on the promotions. Sobrang mali ng sistema. Hassle. (Unless naayos na nila over 5 years)

if that's your idea of fun (slamming on the mat) then you're really going to love judo.. first thing you'll be taught is to pefect the art of falling on the mats. including slamming..
am interested in these: tai chi, jeet kun do (tama ba spelling?), and judo. kaya lang, pwede pa ba mag-aral ng mga to ang *ehem* not so young ?? baka di na kaya ng rayuma ko?
but if i'm to pursue a particular sport, it'll be running. i want to run & finish a marathon. patulong naman; baka may contacts kayo or know of any running club?? thanks!!

however sa mga nababalitaan ko nag-jujudo, nasisiraan sila ng uniform...
s2chard: there are two types of gi(s).. yun ang tawag sa uniform sa judo.. the thin one, and the thick one. syempre mas mahal yung makapal na gi, pero mas matibay. sa grappling kasi, your opponent will be grabbing you and your uniform simultaneously. either to throw you sa mat, or pin you down, either way, there will be a lot of pulling and pushing.. hence, the tattered / destroyed uniforms..
anz: mixed martial arts combat? you're not refering to the no-hold barred matches, are you? grabe, ang lupit non, di ko ma-take.
naja: sa UP, may PE na running for fitness (there's also walking for fitness). CHK usually offers special classes pag summer/ vacations. if you want, enroll ka, yun lang, may bayad ng konti. if you want naman, you can jog/run/walk/sprint sa acasd oval anytime you want.
I think we basically all agree that martial arts are a good thing... it doesn't matter which one you take up. they may all seem different, but really, the ideals are the same. even judo, or aikido, although they may seem like gentler martial arts, aim at self-defense, and the protection of health and life in general. the reason we study them is to learn how NOT to get hurt right, so we have to venture into them being ready to experience a few bad falls. that's how we get better.

You think that's bad?
