Why have rock bands popped like mushrooms these past few years? I've been living here for so long but I haven't the "calling" to be a band member nor at least as a vocalist. Am I missing anything?
Stupid pop culture telling us what should be cool.

Well... Rock bands nowadays are making their mark in the Philippine Music Scene. I think it was because most rock Bands came up with original songs. People got tired of revivals and ballads so I guess that's how Rock got into the scene. Yet, for me it's still best to listen to all types of music and not just stick to one genre.
for me.. rock bands now, popping like mushrooms are just not rock bands.. their pop bands, sounding all the same, like cueshe, callalily, frio and many more.. di ko intensyong sirain ang mga bandang yan, but they really sound very similar.. even the songwriting, di na ganun kahalaga ang songwriting nowadays.. di ko naman nilalahat.. and this scene is not because filipinos do rock now, filipinos started to rock a long time ago until now.. nung mga kabataan ko (di pa naman ako ganun katanda), youths are hesitant to play as a band, tinatancha pa nila ang mga kakayanan nila sa pagtugtog, kaya magagaling talaga yung mga banda noon, ngayon matuto lang ng ilang chords sa gitara, matutunan lang kung papano kumalabit sa bass at matuto lang ng isang beat sa drums, banda na.. im not saying that all the bands now ay wala ng talento, but mostly ganun.. naging 'trend' na lang kasi ang banda ngaun.. pag may banda ka cool ka, pag marunong ka mag gitara pogi ka.. kaya yung iba, pumuporma na lang, kahit katiting ang alam..
according to wikipedia: Rock and roll (also spelled rock 'n' roll, especially in its first decade), also called rock, is a form of popular music, usually featuring vocals (often with vocal harmony), electric guitars and a strong back beat.. thus, this is the type of music that your grandma considers noisy.. and bands popping now are not like this..
one more thing, ung ibang magagaling na rock band ngayon ay mga dating musicians na, look at bamboo, typecast, urbandub, shiela and the insects, the dawn, rivermaya, kapatid, eternal now, even the mongols, and a lot more.. not saying that i like most of them, pero magagaling talaga sila at mga dati pa silang tumutugtog, and they play real ROCK music.. not the diluted rock music that the stupid pop culture is telling us..
if I offended some of you guys, I am so sorry, but this is what i really think is happening.. hindi porket my banda rock na kagad..
^ YES!

Regarding the proliferation of "shallow bands": It's business. Companies need to make money. And as long as that's the case, then bands like Hale and Callalily will continue to exist. Deal with it.
(In fairness, Champ is a nice guy)
Ice: It's a cycle. Bands are on top for now, then it will be something else in the future. After a few years, it will be bands again. Just watch.
KJot: Tsk, tsk, you forgot to mention my favorite bands! Up Dharma Down, Paramita, Drip, Swissy, Chillitees, Sound, Sino Sikat, Radioactive Sago Project, Pupil, POT, Kala, Stonefree, Imago, Sandwich, Itchyworms, and Sugarfree.
And this isn't even HALF of the really good bands.
The fact is, I don't think the scene is as bleak as you think it is. OPM Rock has been on an upswing since 2004. There are many bands out there who do take pains to sound original and fantastic. There are bands out there that put in the time and effort. In fact, I daresay that most of the innovative moves have been on OPM rock, and not anywhere else.
(Although I'm not too happy with the downpour of revival albums)
Bands like Cueshe, Hale, Callalily, 6cyclemind (God bless them), Spongecola, among others are necessary evils. Sure, they may be "pop rock" or "pogi rock", but they cater to a mass market, and that's not necessarily wrong. Besides, they wouldn't be around if nobody buys their albums, so who's fault is that. And as far as options are concerned, there are loads of fantastic bands out there. Bands I support 100%.
I dare anybody to listen to ANY of the bands I mentioned, then tell me to my face that they suck. I'm that confident of their skill and artistry to even put myself in this position.
Ang nawala ang mga studio-produced divas and their male counterparts. The last big diva was Sarah G. The big studios were severely hit by piracy and downloading and any efforts on their part to produce the next big superstar would no longer return the same revenues as the days before the internet. (See also Tower Records).
To independent bands, however, the new media are a blessing, since they no longer needed the big studios to make it big. The internet could only make raise awareness for their music, and they can earn revenues through live performances instead of just cd sales.
The studios can now pick among the more popular bands and give them a contract.
As to real vs shallow rock, the real rock musicians are there, just less exposed compared to the popular bands. And remember: with mp3 players, you can now screen out all the music you don't like.
Finally, I'm sure everyone remembered the novelty song fad of 2 years ago, which, by comparison, makes today's bands seem like Mozart. Ang bango bango ng bulaklak....

right, these bands are real rock bands..
nakakainis lang about those 'pop bands', they consider themselves to be rockers, kaya pag narinig sila ng tao, sila ung rock, and the real rockers, ingay na lang.. nawala na ung true meaning ng rock, nagpakadalubhasa pa naman ung mga musician to be rock bands then sasabihin na lang ng tao eh maingay na lang, bakit? kasi naiba na ung meaning ng rock, binago na ng mga tao ung meaning ng genre para magfit in sa kanila.. PROLIFERATION indeed..
It is indeed business. This is the reality of "rock" music today. Perople form a band and do music for the money and the fame. Since rock makes a lot of dough nowadays, it's "Let's form a rockband and get rich". Gone are the days where music was the top priority. As long as it remains a fad, people will see and make money instead of making good music for the sake of music.

I want to agree with you, but I can't. The bands I mentioned above? They all have albums released by record labels. They're not sweating it out on some crappy venie, desperate to be recognized. They are recognized and highly regarded.
The fact is, OPM rock is evolving, drawing from different genres and influences to come up with a fresher, newer sound. Listen to a sampling of the OPM songs now, and compare it from a sampling from the 90s. Ang layo na ng musicality ng skill, at ng quality ng mga recordings. This simply means that they actually care about the music they write.
True, there are bands that pop up to cash in on the wave, but they will all fall by the side. Hale is floundering, Spongecola is fading away, Callalily never really took off, and the list will go on. The bands of real substance and character will keep afloat.
So stop looking at the Pogi bands. They're all just flashes in the pan. They don't represent the entire industry.
My Kuya and I are teenagers in the 90s...grunge bands and rock bands are popular back then.
Now, my Kuya's a bassist of a rock band...
I just notice that in a decade, at least there is one generation that will follow the "rock craze".
Some of the bands (or theier members) have been in the rock scene for long, like Locomotiv...Sandwich have Raymund, Pupil (meron pa ba nun, hindi ako updated eh) has Ely. Rivermaya has Rico, all that i've mentioned have been in the rock scene back in the 90s.
It's just that the timing for rock musicians are just ripe.
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."
psychoCOW: You're right. I didn't mean to generalize all rock bands. I was referring to the Pogi Bands actually. It is true that there are still a lot of musikeros who are recognized by their talents.
@bugoytheman: Rico just left maya, reasons? speculations..
these pogi bands make me sick.. sana lang, di nila kino-consider yung sarili nila as rockers.. ang concern ko lang naman ay ung para sa mga bagong musikero, i mean mga bata pa.. they need to know what rock really is.. for their own safety, for them to have a good foundation on the real music, mahirap tumanda ng mali ang alam, if they really want to play like those pogi bands, they should not consider themselves as rockers..
"oh, the river is wide, the river it touches my life...like the waves on the sand...and all roads lead to tranquillity base...where the frown on my face disappears..."

.. yes! well said.. tyka guys alam niyo ba ung unang single ng cueshe? yung chorus nun sounds like the chorus of silverchairs song, 'the greatest view'.. gayang gaya..
bugoytheman: i think i heard cakewalk, di ko lang maalala kung kelan.. hahanapin ko sa mp3 ko.. and by the way, for me, pogi bands are bands who cant really showcase any "real" talent, so to remedy that, they use their handsomeness and charisma to get peoples attention.. or maybe im too harsh, but i like what i typed..
